Default Cheerleader ordered to pay for refusing to cheer the man who raped her.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...t-2278522.html

She was 16 when she said she had been raped at a house party attended by dozens of fellow students from Silsbee High School, in south-east Texas. One of her alleged assailants, a student athlete called Rakheem Bolton, was arrested, with two other young men.
In court, Bolton pleaded guilty to the misdemeanour assault of HS. He received two years of probation, community service, a fine and was required to take anger-management classes. The charge of rape was dropped, leaving him free to return to school and take up his place on the basketball team.
So not only does the man who admitted sexual assault in a plea deal for a rape charge get to keep his place on the team, his victim has to pay compensation to the school for not chanting his name.

Are things like this common? I mean is high school sports so important as to blot out rape?

This is an old story Justi. But it's so heinous, even Sports Illustrated wrote an article on it. It's messed up, and it's exemplary of the sports worship some people suffer from. But there isn't much else to say other than. "This is ed up". And talk about a culture issue.

Though it's not current, so doesn't belong in the Mudpit.

read it again, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault, because of that the rape charge was dropped (plea bargain by the looks), he admitted sexually assaulting her to get out of the rape trial.

It shouldn't be dropped no matter what - it is the court's fault to even allow plea bargain. A rapist is a rapist and should be known by everyone as such.

Unless there wasn't enough evidence for them to be sure of a win in court. That's usually why police allow plea bargains isn't it?

The retarded thing is that, assuming the rape allegations are true, she wanted to be a cheerleader, for the sport he played.

Cheerleading is not covered by "free speech" so this is completely correct..

Lower courts had ruled that she was speaking for the school, rather than for herself, when serving on a cheerleading squad – meaning that she had no right to stay silent when coaches told her to applaud.
I knew this had to be the south since they take cheer leading as something serious and important, but since charges were dropped, right or wrong and no details are given on that, then she doesn't get to choose how she does her little cheer thing.

The parents had no case, and yes they deserve to pay for court costs.

except if you read the OP HE HAD PLEADED GUILTY to lesser offences related to the incident.

In court, Bolton pleaded guilty to the misdemeanour assault of HS. He received two years of probation, community service, a fine and was required to take anger-management classes.
It was an utterly bankrupt plea bargain, rapists should get the full force of the law dropped on them, the only bargain being early guilty for a lesser sentence. (And then have RAPIST branded d on their foreheads, be castrated and then handed over to the prison population bound and gagged at Christmas, without guard protection or observation.) Yes I hate rapists, how can you tell?

This is just one of those crazy and wacky stories that happen from time to time.

Also why all the ''rape charges dropped because of sports contract'' vibe if the USA is supposedly full of young man who are traumatized for life because they didn't get into the NFL or NBA ... this dude can't be that good at playing ball.

If she doesn't want to cheer for rapists she should get out of cheerleading.

This is high school sports in the American south.

Cheering for rapists is the job description of a cheerleader.

High school sports in Texas are serious. More serious than rape, apparently.

Mark Henry and Chloe Jones also went to this school. Damn, Houston sucks. I have high doubts such charges would be reduced in other towns.

With the complete lack of information here, its not really possible to reach a reasoned opinion on the validity of the charges.

My gut wants to say "guilty" and assume the case was mishandled, but I can't be sure.

He plead to a lesser charge of sexual assault and the girl seems to have most the signs of attempted or full out rape. He's guilty.

The lesson is, if you want to a girl against her will, you better be damn sure you're in the military, police, or sports.
