Voula tweeted "With so many Africans in Greece... At least the West Nile mosquitoes will be eating home-made food!". The Greek olympic comitee considered that racist remark and they banned her from participating in the Olympics.

OK, I agree it was a tasteless joke, but I don't think it's racist. Also since South Africa, Iran and other similar countries that routinely discriminate against national or religious groups come to the Olympics, I think her punishment is extreme.
Also, let's not forget that the Olympic comitee chairman ows like 1 million Euro in taxes or something. He has little ground to say he promotes the Olympic ideal and Voula insults it.

Because she didn't accuse the Africans of anything or attributed them any good/bad attribute as a race.
She just said that the mosquito from Africa would have large pool of available African people. She didn't insunuate that being African is bad.

Racism is the belief in one race's inherent superiority over another. Joking that the west nile virus is from Africa does not make any racist claim.

It's love how it's fine if you joke like that about other European nationalities (cheese eating surrender monkeys anyone?), but once you get outside Europe, it becomes racist. It can in no way be inferred from that joke that she is racist against Africans.

I have not the slightest idea.
I didn't even know we had many to be sincere. Sure, you see some Moroccans here and there, and some Libyans and Berbers, but they're few compared to Pakistanis, Iraqis, Afghanis and other places associated with USA one way or another.
