Battles won't work!

So I installed Medieval 2 Gold Edition, which included the Kingdoms expansion pack. Everything seemed to be working fine until I started a custom battle. The loading bar filled up, the hourglass was still rotating, and the music was still playing, but it wouldn't continue to the battle. I ran task manager, which said the program was not responding. The CPU Usage said it was running at close to 100% but I don't know why. The same thing happens on all versions that were included with the expansion pack, including the tutorials. Most of the campaign works fine, but again, battles won't load. Does anyone know why this is?

Also, it DOES NOT display the message saying it "encountered an unspecific error and will now exit". I am playing as the administrator.

So this only happens when you try to initiate a custom battle? Otherwise all of the normal game functions are working as intended - Correct? Can you can play a regular campaign mode without a dump to desktop? Have you modded any of the core files or is this a clean vanilla install?

What flavor of system are you running this on? Desktop, laptop, Windows, Mac, Linux etc? It might help us to know. What exactly is the behavior of the system when it dumps you to desktop? And can you give us your DxDiag log - it might help to know what hardware you're working with. Good luck!

@Polecat: The main menu, campaign, and animations all run very smoothly, but as soon as a battle begins in either custom battles, campaign, or the tutorial, my CPU kicks into high gear and stops responding. Curiously, it doesn't actually crash and boot me to the desktop, it just won't load the battle. I can still move the mouse around too, so it's not a freeze. I DID get the campaign battles to actually run, but it took forever and ran incredibly slow. I'm not entirely sure how to give you my DxDiag log, but I opened and ran it. Do you want me to just copy/paste all the info that shows up? My PC is a Windows Vista 2007, 32-Bit, 2.20 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Processor, and I have no mods installed. So it meets all of the minimum requirements stated on the back of the box. The only thing I'm unsure of is the DirectX compliant video card. I don't know what kind of video card I have on here, but it runs other games just fine.

Some custom battles don't especially those with settlements amonst some with bugged units.

How are battles on the campaign?

Post your dxdiag. I've seen this happen with other members with not enough dedicated vram. Shared ram does not count the way the game is programmed.

How do I post the dxdiag? Do I run it while the game is having problems or do I just run it with nothing else and post the file it asks me to save?

No dedicated graphics memory will do it everytime for battles. It's boorowing enough for campaign but that's it.

If you want battles with this computer, it will cost you a graphics card, a new power supply and a lot better ventilation for them.
