Horrible performance

So I was gifted FotS and installed it, now I wanted to play it but the performance makes it almost unplayable.
The game takes ages to load up (at least 2 to 3 minutes) but that's a problem many people seem to have due to the animated 3D menu screen. Loading times are rather long, too, but that's the lesser of the problems - I can live with that. The main problem is the horrible, horrible performance I'm getting. The game has a low framerate and heavily stutters on both the campaign map and the battle maps, so much that it becomes virtually unplayable.

I have a pretty good computer that can run pretty much anything fluently. For example, I can play Empire and Napoleon on 1920x1080 with all settings (except AA) on high or even ultra, with DarthMod's ultra unit sizes and maximum smoke effects, with only very little stutter in large battles. In Shogun 2, I tried setting the details to medium and even low in some cases, but it doesn't help at all - it stutters horribly no matter what I do.

My GPU is an NVidia GeForce 9600 GT, and I've installed the most recent drivers yesterday to try and fix the problem, but it persists. Now, I heard that some NVidia cards and some NVidia drivers might have problems with the game, so maybe that might be it?

Also, I'm on XP and therefore of course using DX9 mode.

I haven't, but I don't think this should be an issue since my mainboard is fairly new (only bought it about half a year ago).
And since updating the BIOS is something that can potentially go wrong, I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Restart your computer and get the BIOS number off the boot screen or maybe in the first screen in BIOS. If there is a newer BIOS available, you will need to update.

I believe your board model is one of them that does need to be updated.

Well I'd change from xp for a start and for that res a more powerfull gpu is required.

No 4xaa and 16af is horrible I think..

The graphics card is pretty ancient, so I'm not too surprised the performance is bad. It also doesn't help that Shogun 2 is incredibly performance hungry and easily the heaviest game I have played, though I don't really know how well the requirements are supposed to scale down if you take all your settings way down.

You may also want to overclock your GPU and CPU, though it won't make miracles, so if you can't make the game even playable, that won't make it enjoyable.

I am having almost exactly the same problem as the OP. I made a thread about it as well. But my my case the computer is brand new, I have a GTX 580. In battle I will have to click a unit 2-3 times to select it, hell even the menu's lag. On my old computer that had a 280 the game ran 1000X better.

Brand new computer = have you tried updating the motherboard drivers, graphics drivers, audio drivers, and Windows Update manually?
