Default [POLL] The biggest threat which Rome has to face ?

Hey guys, I was asking myself about it as I have only faced greek and barbarian (Arvernii) factions so far and couldn't find such a poll.

So for you, which faction or people is the biggest threat that you have faced as Rome ?

Without having fought them, I was thinking about Parthians as they usually rape the Seleucids.

Parthia = Catraphacts + HA Cataphracts against whom legions seem not to have any chance to beat - in open field of course.

Internal struggles and all factions on your borders. Much like real life Rome.

Barbarians I can handle, (both Greek and Celtic barbarians) but I have a difficulty fighting horse based civilizations. Parthians, Sarmartians etc

Very much depends on where you expand, and how long it takes you.
However, it's very much horse-based nations.
In 2.1 I'd definately say Parthia, in the 2.5 Open Beta, I'd say the Samartians.

in the campaigns I've tried with Rome, i've not really been interested in taking Asia Minor, or further east.
That said, to my experience, Samarthians have always turtled for a few hundred turns, then exploded south, across Asia Minor and the middle east, engulfing anything in their way, be it Armenia, Pontus, Pergamon, Seleucids, and yes, even Parthia.

However, I guess that if you block the Samarthians route south, it'll definately not be them you have to fear, they only have so much potential for expanding anywhere but south.

As G.W. Bush would say the biggest threat are those who are not with us. That is those that are against us. Look squirrel ))

I'm confident I have. I just haven't -- you just put me under the spot here, and maybe I'm not as quick on my feet as I should be in coming up with one."

Sarmatians in my campaign. And probably Parthians as well, although I haven't fought them yet.

Early on - the Socii Rebels can be a bit of a handful (you will find them beefed up in v2.6)
Middle - the Cimbri invasion forces are tough if you want to face them
General - the Macedonian (and similar) decent Phalanx armies with support can be hard

Carthaginians, Gallaeci, Averni not nearly as bad. Dacians if they survive, but Scythians normally don't.

There probably isn't a need to go near the Parthians indeed - but (and haven't faced them yet) the Sarmatian (similar to Goths, Huns, Vandals, etc) may well represent a problem - but that's for the future.

    Tricky:
Early, as the campain starts, the grimmest treat is the rebelion, wich can put you down fairly fast if you don't handel it.

Next comes, as the game advances, the dificult conquest of iberia, if the gallaeci develop well(in my current Spartan campain, like 40 turns in the game, they have like 6 or 7 stacks and are ready to tremple the cartaginians out of iberia.)and then the taking of north africa,to secure the western border if the player gets this far.

A fairly hard endevor will come next against macedon if they get greece and the northern barbarian settlements. This will give them the possibility to recruit good strong and numerous armies, tough to deal with phalanxes.

The marian reform should be in sight now.The old armies must go and the legions start to protect the borders.
The cimbri must be repelled and footholds in Asia Minor must be established(maibe conquer Pergamon if they don.t get to powerful.
You should be like 100-150 almost 200 turns into the game now. The second rebelion is in sight now and the real hard troubles begfin. If you quell it, all is good and no one can stand in your way.

My opinion is thet, for Rome, all the factions are hard to play against.(yeah those horse archers are bad-ass but slowly and steadely they will be beaten.
