    Default Regional long pike phalanxes?

    So far while playing as the Romani I noticed that there doesn't seem to be any regional "long pike" (aka Macedonian style) troops. The most I can recruit are the Alpine Phalanxes, Helveti Phalanx, and the Hoplitai units with their shorter spears.

    Are there any regional long pike units?

    Mmm ... there are Mercenary units that you can hire around Italy and Greece. But no, I'm pretty certain that Rome doesn't have access to Pike units.
    I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

    Romans didn't historically have phalanx units. In the start maybe, but in the later, Polybian army no.

    And If I am not mistaken, EB is based on historical accuracy.

    Phalanx =/= Sarissa-armed.

    In any case, the question being asked is about Regional units - IE, the local auxiliaries the faction is capable of employing, as opposed to the faction's own units. It would not be unreasonable to expect Phalangitai Deuteroi or Pantodapoi Phalangitai to be available for recruitment in some areas.

    Sorry, I didn't realize Phalanx=/= Sarissa-armed.

    I just checked the recruitment viewer and indeed the Romani do not have access to any Phalangitai units. Thanks for the responses guys.

    Yeah but unlike in M2 they can't be retrained.....at least in RTW you can retrain gold chevron units and still experience no exp loss.

    Though some mercs (like Merc Pikes) are quick enough to respawn that you can maintain a decent number of them if you start recruiting them early - so long as you avoid major casualties in battle, anyway. And the "Retrain and still retain XP" probably is either a bug or an exploit, because it's a ridiculous mechanic.

    Ridiculous indeed, because nothing is as awesome as having a full stack of golden extraordinarii butchering everyone.

    I prefere to blend depleted units, just makes it feels more realistic.

    The only units that get gold chevrons in my games are FM units and slingers perhaps, mostly due to standing on top of walls and doing what they do best.

    I have never noticed a difference between retraining and merging with a fresh unit. Both decrease XP if the older unit is sufficiently depleted.

    I do the same as above: I merge veteran units together. I don't see any shame in building up experienced units when the AI spams elite units as if there's no tomorrow.

    Retraining doesn't lower XP

    and it's a bit odd when some cheap unit has gold chevrons but still uses same equipment, that lack of different kinds of leveling through fighting is very disappointing, especially that nothing changes in such games... you have some poor archers, somehow they survived few battles and they still run in some green pyjamas...
