Default just thought of a really neat idea

... though i will let you guys be the judge

this one i've thought for a while, TW games have always operated on an in-battle existential binary: either a soldier is alive and fighting or dead. how about in R2 we see wounded/injured/dying soldiers on the battlefield ? i don't think it should be complicated, for instance while fighting's going on, say some individual unit hacked off a soldier's arm. then just have the engine register this poor fellow as "dead" and thus not part of the unit count anymore, and thus inoperative, but in place of a dead corpse you can add some cool animation that shows him rocking on the floor screaming for their moms while the rest of the battlefield's still ablaze until the end of the battle. now that's pretty dark/immersive ! of course you could argue that the enemy soldier would finish him off after hacking off the arm, but that's a specific argument

would love to hear any thoughts, go easy on me now im just sharing lol

btw thought of some other stuff, might as well just put it in here for the heck of it

    - i know CA wants this to be more realistic/darker, so maybe they can make veteran units (those already having fought in previous battles) look more rough by i dunno their costumes more dishevelled and dirty than new recruits ?
    - would be awesome if in-battle soldiers speak their native tongues like in E/N:TW. adds more immersion. i know latin's not so much in use anymore, but these are just brief one-liners/commands anyways, not too long (though i do recognise the problems with really dead languages from that time lol)
    - is it possible to "decentralise" a unit model ? so for instance in a battle somebody blocked an attack using a shield/helmet but the blow was so strong that the piece of equipment gets knocked off, and has to fight the remainder of the battle w/o that protective gear (in the reasoning that it would be folly to search for it amongs the bodies of men in the heat of battle). that would add another layer of individuality as it further diminishes the clone armies of TW yore (of course in the next battle they're reequipped if they survive). though i do recognise this might be too complicated

Wounded and dying soldiers on the battlefield is already in Shogun 2 so they are probably going to include them in Rome 2 as well.

Wow, didn't know that as I didn't play Shougun II. Sounds like it brings more atmosphere to the battlefield.

On the battlefield yes, they are either killing or a corpse in the ground. Shogun 2 introduced some creepy (in a good way) animations of dying and agonizing people, but in the end of the day, not all of those that stopped moving die. If you see your post battle screen sometimes you will see that some "casualties" are recovered, that means, soldiers where wounded in battle but where stitched back to combat ready status afterwards. Things like having a battle surgeon (Medieval 2) actually improved the chances of saving people after battle.

So a unit of 200 guys took 100 casualties in battle, but after battle you see that from those 100 "deaths" ony 80 where truly death, the other 20 are restored so in the campaign map you end up with an unit with 120 guys instead of 100.

This was random, so not all the time you could count on this. And it might be just my imagination but it seemed that those units taking casualties from arrows tended to recover more men than those taking casualties from melee and firearm weapons.

Where's the medical units? - Rome HAD surgeons for wounded soldiers / gladiators, another idea stolen off the greeks.

i want to see servants / other soldiers carrying wounded men back out of harms way.

WRONG!! you're thinking of the middle ages or later, Roman surgeons could mend slashed limbs by putting small tubes in the cut veins to guarantee blood flow, then clean the wound with vinegar ( I vaguely remember) then stitching it up! .. it worked! Gladiators were treated well medically.

You need to watch more of the History Channel, sonny!

What do ancient aliens and ice road truckers have to do with Roman surgeons?

Having surgeons running around the battlefield and(presumably) picking up wounded soldiers and carrying them off the map is abit too difficult to get working properly i think

But you could go with a less realistic alternative and enable you to have surgeons traveling with your army, and after you WIN(note: only when you win) you get 2-4% of your casualties back. It's not realistic but hey.

Surgeons would work sort of like an agent* (How do you edit messages?? 25 posts and registered for a week)

In battle animations would seems like a hard thing to do. Rome and Med 2 had this as ancillary (or trait). That worked.

They should bring back prisoner system to Rome 2. You can either Ransom,Release,Execute,or enslave them.

They should make the dying soldiers talk or scream while they are wounded or dying.

They have had the wounded soldiers since the first Rome as far as I know, but it never showed men actually wounded, you just had a chance to "heal" an amount of them that were cut down in the battle. Seeing as Shogun 2 had the wounded men squirming on the ground and stuff, logically they will just add it in to this game as well.

I think it would be cool if they had battlefield soldiers speaking in the tongue of the land where they were recruited. It would add realism to the game, and the only people we really need to hear talking on the battlefield anyway is the general and captains, who can have modern voices.
