In at least 50% of my battles, my general and some of my men have gone over to the other side. Why does this keep happening, and how do I stop it?

that often? it only happens a few times per campaign for me.. im pretty sure it has to do with the generals honor and stuff like that.. not totally sure which other factors contribute to it though
Did you mean your units change sides during the battles ? that would be funny (and realistic )
Hmmm , only way to lose your units in campaign map is if they get bribed (which is quite rare tbh , unless it"s a lone unit or few ones ) or if you are bankrupt , i don't see any other cause
The way to avoid this unpleasant thing would be to check your general's honour (adopt him if he had low honour or don't give him an army , put him in a fleet and vet him until he has 4 stars , then you can boost his loyalty/honour or just kill him by disbanding or marry him if you have a daughter )
Also putting a shinsengumi/ishi ishin agent in your stack should work to protect against bribers , not 100% sure , but with metsuke it definetely works as long as your metsuke is better than the offensive agent , there would be a very low percentage of success chances for the enemy agent
Otherwise if you don't have enough metsuke/shinsengumi type of agent , another trick is to always have a ninja in your main army (needs a dojo in fots) at least and in other armies too , specialize them in assasination when they vet and scout often around your army , as soon as you see a dangerous enemy agent , kill him (2 ninjas are handy if the first one misses ) , it costs some money at first , but there are ways to reduce ninja costs later on

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I actually have a mod that increases the chance of that happening, as well as changing loyalty to make generals less loyal.![]()

Respecto Patronum
Really?
I`ve seen it quite a few times and like it. Simply because it`s quite realistic. It can really add a sudden change to the dynamic of battle that was at first considered a guaranteed win.
@SonOfCrusader76,
The reason this happens is because you`re not looking after your Generals at all. They do have a kind of personality and if you ignore them too long, they`ll get unhappy and show it.
Go into your Factions screen and look at the Generals you have. Find any really low starred Generals. these are the ones likely to defect. Promote them or marry them to make them more loyal. Try not to promote anyone into another General`s position or that General will start wanting to betray you.
Separate any really low starred Generals from huge armies.
Best solution is make him an admiral and he will vet up through sea battles. Also, you can't defect on the open sea.
Cheers Humble, that's very useful.I knew they developed traits if left alone for too long, but I thought they involved hobbies like Geisha-collecting
not stabbing you in the back!
Edit: I'm all for features like this - just would've been nice if the game had given me a heads-up as to why it kept happening.![]()

Neither have I, but I play on vanilla.
Generally speaking, I keep an eye on the loyalty levels of my generals and honour of my Daimyo, and tend to be the one that does the bribing.
Eats, shoots, and leaves.
Mutiny would be an interesting option.

Wow. I didnt knew that feature even exsisted. Nice one. I guess i keep my generals and Dayimo with high honor and doesnt happen to me.
I got i once during a FOTS campaign. It really pissed me off. I decided to reload an earlier game to understand why it happened. I saw that the defecting general had no loyalty left before the battle. I actually found it realistic and fought the battle.
I've had a general defect from time to time. Does defection happen with reinforcing generals as well or just the main army?

A one or two point loyalty general will a have a chance to defect once they enter a battle.
A 5 star general defected for me.... :L. I wonder if this can happen the other way, i.e when you are attacked and some of their men & generals defect to your side.
