Default Suggestion: make forts/city walls much cheaper to produce (AI NEVER builds them)

Currently it costs the hefty amount of 8000 to build fortifications around cities and towns. This number is far too high, and so the AI almost NEVER builds them. This makes for extremely bland siege gameplay, as every siege I have encountered on the campaign map so far is with a town with no walls.... boring. Even cities such a Paris or Berlin I found to be completely undefended, which is ludicrous.

The way I see it, there are a few options, and these are not mutually exclusive:

    1) Tweak AI behavior so that they try to build fortifications if possible

    2) Drastically cut the cost of fortifications from 8,000 to something more reasonable like 2,000 or 3,000 so the AI actually can afford them

    3) If possible, at the very least give capital/major cities fortifications from the very beginning of the campaign, as obviously these areas would be heavily defended historically.

There may be another reason for this. I'm currently playing H/H, and some forts have popped up in the larger cities. However in N/N games the AI never builds them. Not to mention E/E (but I doubt anyone plays E/E). And I can guarantee you that forts WILL pop up on VH/VH games just a thought. So if you're playing N/N, try up:ing to H/H glhf

I will try the very hard setting BrodY as I too have seen a paucity of forts on "Hard" setting. I build them like the dickens because if the AI invades I want that boost of gun emplacements and extra militia to sacrifice in bayonet charges as I attempt to preserve my crack/elite units for the end game.

You get extra militia for building a fort? You sure?

I believe there is a slight boost to militia reinforcements with a fort, yes.

The AI never attacks me when I build forts though, they just wait out and starve the garrison.

Actually in my ottoman campaign, russia attacked my fort on their border, I was outnumbered by 5 units, it was bloody battle lasted for over 30 min, was epic, I almost won, but the game crashed before the battle ends, I played again and I got defeated, the last 2 units of mine were winded, and the only thing left of russian army was 4 pieces of cannons and a general, cannons destroyed first unit, general rushed to the second one, I lost, but I was satisfied, then in the campaign they entered my territory with full stack, forced me to sign peace.......
Thanks darth, never happened to me in any vanilla total war games or any other mods.

I also posted this in the 2.6 feedback thread, but I might as well paste it here as well:

I haven't had a chance to download and try the new version yet, but I do not understand at all why you made fortifications cost MORE when as it was before, you basically never fought over fortifications. As it was in 2.5+++, not even capital cities like Paris were defended by forts which made 0 sense what so ever. Here is the thread:

So now we have a 100% chance to never fight sieges that include fortifications? This is definitely a big step in the wrong direction Darth, and it really takes away from the realism of attacking major cities. A major part of Napoleonic warfare were sieges of fortifications but right now that aspect is completely missing from DMN.

I agree with you, even though the sieges in Empire and Napoleon are not as good as previous games, but I enjoy playing them , in Darthmod Napoleon every full campaign I played I faced 0 to 1 siege battle, this one siege battle to be honest always an epic battle as the one I described above. I have to agree also that AI rarely build them, the one battle I had in every campaign usually is my fort that I built. The only problem with siege right now is the CTD , and that is it.
I hope Darth will take a look at the cost of forts again.

I thought everyone agreed that sieges are the worst part of any total war game so far, especially in Empire/Nap? I like it the way it is in darthmod.

Yeah, it's always weird to see these sorts of request. I was actually wondering why there wasn't an option to turn siege battles off completely in DM:N as there was in DMUC.

I can report that playing as the French on H/H completely through on 2.5+++ that I never fought a siege battle. Never saw a fort outside of what I built. I can also say that nearly completing 2.5+++ on VH/VH I have fought maybe 1-2 siege battles. I camped a lot and allowed the AI to get established before I went on the offensive. I look forward to 2.6 Epic with relish.... and some salami on an asiago cheese kaiser...

I love Darthmod Napoleon, but there are a few things here and there that really hurt the experience IMO and this is one of them. In the next couple days I will undoubtedly play 2.6 and love 99% of it's new features and praise Darth as an amazing modder in the feedback thread. But that doesn't change that I think there are some issues to be addressed ... otherwise the mod doesn't improve.

Yes, I took the trollbait. Oh well, had to be said.
