Sengoku Basara is more Shonen oriented, it's taking a lot of liberties with the characters. There aren't really that many Sengoku Jidai anime that are historically accurate. Though I enjoy Sengoku Basara for what it is, mindless fun.

Sengoku basara should not be taken so seriously, it's a pretty fun series, based on a insteresting period. if you don't enjoy Oda Nobunaga being basically an actual demon, Honda Tadakastu being a Gundam, more power to you. doens't mean that the series is bad though.

I knew it! I told everyone that giant mechas have always been a part of Japanese history, and now this anime proves it!

I might break my dub only rule and take a look at this.

Isn't that the whole point of anime? After all the target audience for anime are teenagers.

I think the art style is wasted on silly plotlines that are catering to an over feminzation of men and over... cuteness? for women, which is basically the japanese version of the unrealistic and unubtainable beauty of women thats going on, which is rather ezcitzofrenic of Japan when you think about it. Really, I get the stylization of the sengoku era like in Nobunaga's ambition, or maybe changing the Sengoku era to another timeline, a future sengoku era if you will, but overtly changing the sexes of some of the most iconic japanese heroes, into the most cliched tropes of anime, turning the sengoku era into a romantic comedy? Adding robots into medieval Japan? no, just no.
It speaks volumes on whats going on to Japans youth, male and female, when you completely disregard national heroes (or at least historical figures) for the sake of Hentai and this Otaku thing.

I do recall a movie by the name of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" hitting theatres not too long ago

So there's a ridiculous work of fiction based (very loosely) on historical events, that's nothing new in any part of the world so I really don't get the big deal.

It's also worth noting Samurai films/shows (Sengoku Era one included) in Japan are like Western/Cowboy films/shows are to America. They've been done so many times that you have to be really creative, have very compelling or have a big celebrity behind it for a producer to even bother looking in it let alone giving it the green light. Nobody makes westerns anymore without an interesting twist. Why can't the Japanese do that to with their history?

Abraham lincoln was not turned into a 13 year old girl, and the reasoning for it (Female Oda) is largely because of the Kawaii culture thing thats becoming so prominant in Japanese mainstream. Admittedly the mania of americans in turning everything into monsterhunters is also quite stark, but I have not seen it take such an affect in the mainstream to the point where you have this:

And a large portion of the male teen demographic that is openly not into sex or the other gender, or marries pillows or inanimated objects (Games, cellphones) because they are supposed to be some of the women in the Anime.
It is like the whole Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter thing, except taken to a whole other level of extreme, like a campy real life 4chan. It is no worse than dressing up as spiderman and the like, but the ridicoulousness is just way to extreme in Japan that it actually has become a massive fenomenon.

On point for the strong female character, I hate that but for reasons entirely different to Ubermind, its not that its unrealistic having a women be a badass in the series, teenage or not, its how they do it and why that annoys me and is every bit as bad as the depictions in western comics. Whats the point of having Oda nobunaga roundhouse kick a teenage boy from across the room while very clearly showing the thong?
I do like certain anime, that Sengoku manga looks pretty ace, but like comics, I eventually outgrew them and their tired cliches except for some pretty good, pretty niche stuff.

And since I am a history geek, this sengoku thing really hit close to home and I felt the need to rant about it.

What also bothers me not just the butchering of the setting , but basically the over recycled mainstream anime story . With annoying teenage protagonist who always defeats the bad guy in the last episode no matter how hard the bad guy beats him up . So i can get over the powers and robots but not over that . And not to mention ruining a badass figure as Date Masamune ( Or Takeda Shingen ) , they had to turn him into a fag .

I won't even bother with commenting what Condottiere posted .

There is a manga simply called "Sengoku" that's on going in Japan (and translated in Asia) that is quite amazingly accurate and detailed though, but it's mostly a nich work for the well learned (and almost all adult) folks.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    (a military exercise)

    (clash of the yari)

    ("cavalry" charge"

the story generally follows the well known stories of Nobunaga, but it uses a low ranking Samurai as the main charactor to get a more ground level view of things, (well said Samurai would end up as a daiymo in the end as well... but that's many years later down the road)

1180, an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity in East Asia, it's technology and wealth is the envy of the world. But soon conflict will engulf the entire region with great consequences and lasting effects for centuries to come, not just for this region, but the entire known world, when one man, one people, unites.....
