Thread: Hands up if you consider yourself an expert on antiquity...

Default Hands up if you consider yourself an expert on antiquity...

Ok, after seeing all the 'this soldier has the wrong kind of tread on his sandals' threads popping up, I thought I would do a poll to see exactly how many 'experts' we really do have.

I'm going to make the poll viewable, so should you class yourself as an expert, I'd appreciate it if you would list your credentials, that qualify you as an 'expert'.

Tip: Although EB is a very, very good mod, playing it doesn't make you an expert on antiquity. Just saying.

Hopefully when the poll has been completed, and we have identified our resident experts, we end the debacle, which are threads like 'The centurion put his gold pouch on the left side of his belt, not on the right, unless he was left handed' or 'if warriors went into battle naked, where did they put their hands when it was cold?' threads, and confer all such debates on them. We might even be allowed an 'Ask the expert' thread?

Reading those threads profoundly upsets me.

    From the dictionary:

Professional who has acquired knowledge and skills through study and practice over the years, in a particular field or subject, to the extent that his or her opinion may be helpful in fact finding, problem solving, or understanding of a situation.
Reading things and earning knowledge on Wikipedia or Google, do not make you professional. The 90% of users here do not belong this category

And what about you? Are you an expert? For me a expert is a historian specialized in that time. And even so you can be specialized in soooooooooooooo many different things related to Rome times. Maybe there are too few arround here.

I am not an expert of course, I just simply like history.

No I listed myself as option 4, someone who is not an expert, but laughs at the those that think they are, but are really not, or whatever I called the option.

If you click the number links, you can see whom voted what. I warned about that in the op.

Cool! Thank you for being honest! I wonder how many more people have even less credentials than yourself, but consider themselves experts?...

    Time will tell I guess.

I am no expert of course. You can never be so sure of the things you hear from historians as each have a different opinion on the matter. Also reading books are a ideal way of learning more of what they think generally happened back in the day. We don't know everything after all. However a lot of evidence is out their and often speculate on what to do with that evidence.

Instead of self-proclaimed doctors we should perhaps just stick with the obligatory posting a source for internet arguements?

BTW if anybody from CA reads this thread, could you perhaps tell us how many Experts you have working on the historical accuracy side of the game? If any, could you tell us their name?

We can do a tally at the end and see who has most, kind of like the 'p***ing contest' I was so good at, at school.

So far the score stands at TWC 0.2 - CA 0.0

Congratulations to the scorer for TWC (Darth Revan who has a degree in history 0.1 and classical civilizations 0.1).

I'm no scholar of latin or ancient greek. While I'm well read on classical warfare, I'm fairly certain 50% of what I think I know is probably wrong.

Ooooh, what is this? TWC has it's first resident expert?

Step forward Prometheus who has entered the fray as an expert, and tell us your credentials!

I don't think anybody here is really an "expert", but I do think I know a fair amount, I'm studying it at college and spend most of my spare time studying it and will do it at uni. I do hope to be an "expert" one day, a lot of people here seem to want to sneer at that for whatever reason lol. I'm only 16 so I have plenty of time.
The experts are all professors at Oxford lol.

Graduate student of ancient history, but I wouldn't call me an expert no. That would require at least a PHD and (possibly?) some additional years as a researcher/professor.

    Hey Moros, how's it going?

In hindsight, I think I should have used "a university qualification" as option 2, instead of "read a couple of books". I think that may have been more revealing!

Could a mod reset the poll and add that as number 2, if it wouldn't be too much trouble please?

College educated... but I have seen that those passionate about a subject (degree or not) nearly always possess a better understanding than those simply educated. Sure wish we had time machines.
