    Default recommended specs

    hi,

now i'm sure these forums get these types of questions every once in a while, so if you could manage to browse through pile upon pile of threads and post a relevant link here that would be great.

if not, well here are the parts i plan to get (desktop computer) :

    - i5 3550 processor 3.3 ghz
    - HD7970 3gb ddr5 (it's either this or 1gb HD6850. if you think the 7970 is already overkill and the 6850 runs ultra smoothly enough, please tell me so)
    - 8GB RAM
    - windows 7 64-bit
    - asus P8B75-MLE board
    - 600w power supply

i know one can easily find both minimum and recommended system reqs for this game, but what i wanna know is if this type of system can run, say, on ultra settings. that said, if this is overkill then please tell me, i don't wanna spend unnecessary money (though i am also looking to the future e.g. rome 2 lol)

as you can see, i'm not very knowledgeable hardware/computer-wise, so that is why i wish to call upon and insist on your esteemed counsel

The processor is definitely good enough given that I for one have no issues with ultra settings on a slower mobile CPU (3720QM, 2.6 ghz).

I did initially have some issues with 7970M crossfire, although drivers are finally being released following many complaints from users . I am currently using the official driver released by AMD a couple of weeks ago and it's a big improvement for almost every game I play (Shogan 2 included).

ok so 7970's definitely worth it ? seems like it's much more expensive than a 6850 though...

and a 6850 is far slower your point?

7970 is AMDs top of the line GPU right now

6850 was middle of the road in its generation and was slower than AMDs previous generation 5850 which released in 2009 these gpus are considered Entry lvl / Mainstream today.

it will run the game fine larger battles may bog down a little bit do to the CPU, overclocking fixes that but your CPU wont overclock regardless the game will be smooth 99% of the time with those settings.

    Shogun 2 1920x1200 max settings no AA 6850 = 22 FPS
Shogun 2 1920x1200 max settings no AA 7970 = 50-60 FPS depending on the 7970

i already bought the parts (except i'm keeping my old 550w power supply and hard drive for now) but wow thanks for the help mate ! if it performs at that rate then hopefully this'll be money well-spent then. but man that gtx 690 is outta this world, makes me think if i should've gotten that lol

on another note, care to explain AA and AF ? i actually wiki'd them but didn't understand a word of it (thank you social science degree lol)

AA = Anti Aliasing aka removes jagged edges on polygons makes things smoother better looking, CA's implementation of AA is how should we say less than steller but it works

AF = Anisotropic Filtering improves texture quality at weird angles essentially, keeping them clean and better looking compared to other texture filtering methods.
