Augustus or the Allectus
The "The Cherusker " is a type of Single edged sword used by Germanic groups arround the western Baltic sea during the late PreRoman Iron age and the beginning of first century AD.
It would be great if some Germanic units are armed with these kind of swords in RTW2.
Also some late era Germanic units armed with Gladius swords would be realistic if RTW2 includes the early emperial period of Rome.
it will really depend on the time frame covered. The Allectus early on (i own that sword btw--its amazing) and then transitioning to the Tiberius and then the Pedite in Augustus' time. however the longer gladius hispanesis would be applicable before the time of the Allectus
I believe it was stated in an interview that the Roman's will begin with a "standard weapon" (don't know which) and that getting new weapons can either be done by researching/waiting for a certain year OR taking provinces. Taking Germania early would enable you to introduce the Gladius(i think) before it was introduced in the Roman army historically.
What about this sword?

Hopefully we'll see all the different kinds of gladii dependent on the era of the unit and its armour. I think we put something like a dozen or more gladius variations in RS2 (from hispaniensis through mainz and Fulham to Pompeii), not forgetting different scabbards (again these vary with the era) and different pugio scabbards (see below)
A number of our germanic units had swords very similar to the cherusker, single edged blades looking pretty similar to that, based on archeological finds.
as always good research tone. (im still happily playing your mod now)
Just managed to find this again in the RS2 development forum. This was a render from 3dsmax (by Burninator who did the gladius models) of the different gladii before each of the scabbards got reskinned uniquely, and shows the variety of shapes and lengths of gladii. From left to right:
spatha (x3)
gladius hispaniensis (x3)
Mainz (x2)
Fulham (x2)
Pompeii (x2)

All of these, with the one on the far left being the earliest form of the gladii.

I just meant roman cavalry in general, I didnt actually know when they started using the spatha, I just knew it was a cavalry sword.
Machaira/Kopis swords, Gladius Hispaniensis(Maybe, it has some length), and later on in the Imperial era, the Spatha. Also, I am a modeller and I really do like Republican Era stuff, here's an example of a kopis or Machaira made by me.

Very nice!
This is a great gladius reference: http://www.larp.com/legioxx/gladius.html
This was the inspiration for our single edged ("Cherusker") swords in the Cimbri faction (from the Krogsbølle and Ejsbøl bog deposits - 250-200BC)

Yes, that is probably the best one I've seen so far. I don't have any personal sources of Gladii (I have one on Italian swords) so I used that site.
Also, if you don't mind me asking, but did Romans use different types of handgrips for the Gladius Hispaniesis (I'm asking because I've seen a Celtic styled handgrip on one drawing of the blade of a Roman Princep)?
