I have a book called Warfleets of Antiquity which covers fleets of the ancient world in an almost Janes sort of way. I had been browsing it when I realised it has been out of print for 25yrs (published in 1974) or so and is very rare. The book covers specialised pirate vessels and a lot of civilian types to boot.
and explains their operation. It covers ships crews, tactics and campaigns of Celtic, germanic, greek, persian, carthaginian, hellenic, roman, scandinavian and byzantine craft.
In the lead up to RomeII are there any good dedicated books (apart from osprey which are too specialised and do not cover everything possible or in enough detail or with enough character) on warfleets and navies, even civilian vessels of the time. It would be great if somebody knew of another 100 plus page publication in a similar vein.
We know so much (or as much as we can) about the armies for RomeII, but as far as I am aware people have not researched navies in detail for total war or the community knows very little.
I am curious about all of this in order to see what ships RomeII may come out with and how it might handle fleets and their operation.
If the book is out of copyright I may even be able to scan it for you guys.
