Default Fantastic IDEA - Sub Factions per nation

We all know Rome was made of a alliance / dominance of Etruscans, Sabines, Samnites and Southern greeks (just to name a few), and we know Hannibal main gaol in invading Italy was to SMASH those bonds, not necessary to defeat the whole of Rome.

Wouldn't it be good if all major factions / nations were actually made up of a <number> of subfactions that you as a player must keep happy, otherwise an enemy might try to negotiate them away from you (revolt).

    These could include;

Rome - Etruscans, Sabines, samnites, Greeks
Carthage - Tyrians, Libyans, merchants, Greeks
    Selecuid - Syria, Persia etc
Ptolemic - Egypt, levant, libya? etc
    etc
    etc

Each sub-faction would remain unique and provide troops to fight in your army. They would remain unique even though you control them .. ie NO MORE conquered nations suddenly becoming ROMAN!

excellent idea would revamp the whole culture thing going on in previous games. they should merge into the main faction and remove the threat of revolt, say, 5 years later? thats like 20 turns or so?

I think a better idea would the "area of recruitment" mechanic you see in some Rome/Med 2 mods - you can only recruit certain units when your city is in the area they're from.

you've lost the point a bit here, not just talking about units but the campaign map and the chance and type of revolting.

I'd go more for the "make them proper nations, but make them start as protectorates. If you win a war against them, you have the chance to either free them,or put them in your sphere of influence.Otherwise, you can be them, cancel the protectorate status and rebel against your 'protector' ".
Sort of like Crimea and Barbary Pirates in ETW,with the chances of EU3.

Considering that we'll have between 50 and 100 factions,it's also possible.

That sounds a good idea and within the current engine design. If Rome passes the Law "Service for Citizenship" then these protectorates would need to be able to provide foreign legionaries - auxilaries immediately (on demand).

Accidentaly voted option 1 instead of 2, but yes i support! Thats what Romans did:
Declare war with ridiclious reason, then fight it till the end, then make loosing faction their best ally that secures borders.
Apologies for anyone who's message i may miss or not be able to answer

I'd like to see a system similarly mentioned above.

You conquer say Massylia which was its own minor, you can choose to annex or keep them as protectorates. Annexing will allow you to tax them as such and build their structures and recruit but until they are made Roman citizens they cannot produce home units. Alas some factions should prefer citizenship to others. Stronger cultural factions should be against it and have unhappy penalties added.

yeah, that's about it. i would prefer to see on a map the cultures that still dominate in each region, even if you "control" that region. Having a Selecuid faction "OWNING" most of the eastern med would suck big time, better to see the actual peoples, who's culture is strongest - Persian, Syrian etc etc

Maybe I misunderstan this thread or what little information CA has given so far, but isn't this already in Rome 2? I mean, there are several tribes making up the barbarian factions and several families making up the more "civilized" nations.
There is just one thought that comes to my mind. You could try to bribe a tribe or a family of a nation you are currently attacking to help you in your campaign, just to later reward them with Governor titles and the like. Say you pretend to be Caesar, invade what is modern day France and bribe one of the gaulish tribes.

What I don't like in the old Rome is that when you have conquered a province which is not your own culture, you have to destroy those buildings like temples etc and replace them with your. I believe conquered people will create more discontent if you automatically try to eradicate their own cultures right ? Destroying other people's temples should bring more red faces rather than green I believe.

Isn't that how it worked? i think it did?

I can imagine this being an important issue when rome takes Jerusalem. do you destroy the holy temple? and replace it with a shrine to an emperor ? should have HUGE consequences ..

Yeah, but in Rome I destroying other culture brings peace.
