    Default Starting as Rome

Hi all, may I just take the time out to say this is a fantastic mod, a very well done to the creators!!

I am having one problem though (I suck at RTW ) I just can't seem to get a foothold on the Roman campaign, as you start with two of Hannibals armies (full stacks too) near Rome, I tried using my full stack army to defeat them and managed to kill Hannibal but my army were butchered and the two Carthage armies then went on to take settlements so I sacked that campaign off.

Anything I could possibly do? I've tried bribing the armies to no avail and a ceasefire isn't possible.

What difficulty are you playing on? 1-turn or 0-turn? It is certainly challenging, but no worries, there's hope yet! Have you tried bringing your garrisons from Siciliy and Publius Scipio? You don't need to recruit new units--all I do is use the garrisons you start with. Set you taxes to very high for the first 5-10 years (depending on how long it takes to get Carthage out of Italy!)

I would abandon the region in Nothern Greece-Dyrrhachium. Bring that garrison over to Nothern Italy. I would do the same for Spain. You're especially going to need these troops for the Capuan Rebellion. I know what you're thinking, but don't worry, you can get all these settlements and more back once your economy and threats to your republic are neutralized!

Most importantly, push Hannibal and his forces out of Italy and you should be safe. Killing Hannibal is key, so try at it again with more troops and cavalry as well. I usually charge Hannibal directly in the battle (i do not auto-resolve that one) with the hopes of killing him and his whole army usually routs because of it.

Here's a guide that helped me and I am sure many others when we all started out: (Disclaimer-I believe it is outdated so do not follow the micro-details of management and income to the letter, simply observe the general strategy).

    Goodluck with saving the Republic!

Also, if you aren't that experienced with RTW; or simply don't have a knack for the battles, you should start out as one of the smaller factions.
They usually have an easier start than most, with only a few major enemies - The Roman Campaign is VERY intense at the start, you'll find yourself constantly tested throughout the game.
But this is a mod that will offer you a challenge, both military and governing is totally different from Vanilla RTW.

For an easy start, even though short on money, I can suggest Armenia(No wars at start, and some rebel territory to take before you get into conflict with others)
Sparta is also a good choice, but you'll be facing hordes of Free Greeks from day 1.
Pergamon is good aswell, same as Armenia, but with more money, those few enemies you have, will most likely accept or offer ceasefire almost immediately.
Good luck with whatever you chose!

Firstly - persevere, learn and enjoy. It's supposed to be a challenging game - it it most certainly is.

Second, and a bit of history you may wish to peruse, you did better than Nepos did IRL! Killing Hannibal is an achievement, but the Romans did lose nearly the whole army (and then more). This is the big crisis of the 2nd Punic War that you face.

Try M/M to start - and my personal choice is 1turn. It is quite possible - enjoy.

Try some custom battles until you get the hang of the battle system. Gradually stack the odds against yourself until you develop as a tactician. In RS I strongly advise you not to autoresolve.

In a way, I kinda envy you. Playing this as long as I have, sometimes I get a bit jaded. Victory is much sweeter when you've learned the lessons and overcome the enemy when you're new at this.
