There should be a wider variety of formations than in previous games.
Instead of each broad category of unit (infantry, cavalry, missile, artillery, general) being assigned a spot in the formation, a more in-depth system could be used. For example, an infantry formation could automatically be available for a Seleucid player to have a central phalanx line with flanks guarded by their legion copies, if a multiple phalanx-capable units and at least two centuries' worth of legion copies were selected, similar to how late medieval pike formations often guarded their flanks with shorter, more maneuverable polearms such as halberds or with zweihanders. Yes, I know that the units most likely to flank are cavalry, but this game takes place before stirrups were invented, so the advantage that a horse provided was much less than the advantage that it provided in in the middle ages. Heavy infantry were generally good enough for cavalry aside from mounted archers and cataphracts.
