Default what do you think the purpose of Gendry is?(major plot Spoilers)

I watched the second season recently and am about to read the second book again. I barely remeber him from the book but they seem to make kinda a big deal out of him in the show even though he disappears until... Book 4 i belive when Brienne runs into him again.

But anyway what do you think may be the deal with him? Mayhaps a heir for Stannis or more? If the Information sent to Jon at the end of ADWD is not a lie and stannis is dead then won't he be the last male baratheon or did i miss someone?

    Edric Storm.

Anyway Gendry is 'meh' character for me who serves no other purpose than to annoy me with Arya/Gendry ship.

Gendry would not be heir because Edric Storm is the only acknowledged bastard of Robert.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
it is shown in a chapter from the next book that was released that Stannis is still alive and the message was a lie.
"I, Pinkie Pie, declare that these treats are fit for a king, or a queen, or a princess!"
"Me? Ruin? I'm not the ruiner, I'm the ruinee! Or is it ruinness? Ruinette?"
"She's ahead of the litter all right. The pick of the litter. The cat's pajamas. Oh wait. Why would Applejack take some poor kitty's pj's? That's not very sporting of her."
"More balloons! No, that's too many balloons. More candy! No, less candy. Ooh! I know! Streamers!"
"Oh my gosh. Hold on to your hooves – I am just about to be brilliant!"

It is not tehnically, beacuse the sample chapter happened before last Jon's. But if GRRM is such a bastard to make the letter true i quit the series probably. Let us hope he won't.

Stannis will fall soon ramsay isnt as stupid as some others with his trickies

Gendry will probalby be a bigger character since Edric Storm seems quite meheeh Gendry was in the story longer! i'm sure he'll atleast be a baddass or some sort of Future Storm King (if things go down big time)

Stannis is also one of the most accomplished military commanders in Westeros. Ramsay has commanded... The Sack of Winterfell. Which was against 20 men that turned on their lord anyway. Ramsay has no command experience, though Roose does. Roose might be able to beat Stannis, but I doubt it. Besides, the obvious answer is that Stannis is dead, which means that he's alive. It's how Martin writes. xD Not that I'm saying I'm an expert in predicting Martin's moves, but still.

Maybe the Brotherhood without banners will have a bigger role in the next book? In that case Gendry would be a great point of view!

forgot about Edric Storm. but if someone recognized gendry as a true baratheon wouldn't that make him the heir since he is older? not quite sure how bastards would work in that case.

But why would anyone want to do that?
Only one who can legitimize anyone is the king and Stannis wants shireen on the throne or his own son if he ever gets one. And if anyone else sits the iron throne, why would they legitimize Gendry who would then have a better claim than to the throne?

Either way, Edric seems more charismatic and has been educated by maester, master-at-arms, etc.

Gendry might reforge Ice - he was apprentice to Tobho Mott (did I spell it correctly?), and Mott knows how to rework Valyrian steel.

Or he might somehow link up with either one of the Stark sisters (preferably Arya, who he already knows).

But his Baratheon descendance... dunno how it can pan out.
"For myself, I would see the White Tree in flower again in the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace: Minas Anor again as of old, full of light, high and fair, beautiful as a queen among other queens; not as a mistress of many slaves, nay, not even a kind mistress of willing slaves. War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend: the city of the Men of Númenor, and I would have her loved for her memory, her ancientry, her beauty, and her present wisdom. Not feared, save as men may fear the dignity of a man, old and wise."

yea I'm not really seeing how they can rehash his Baratheon lineage. Only people I thought who knew about him were Jon Aryann and Ned Stark

Just because a character is shown a few times does not mean he/she will become important later on. Edric and Gendry are not the only bastards that have been shown in a few characters, there is also Mia Stone.

I believe that Stannis will die before the series is over and that Edric will die of the Grey Death brought over by JonCon. A certain red priest and drinking buddy of a late king will tell all to Gendry after he unknowingly takes a fancy to his sister.

    Thats my 2 cents

Maybe the purpose of Gendry is for us, the readers, to know that he's a King's bastard, but for him to never find out. He just goes on ahead and lives his life as a brotherhood blacksmith until the war's over. Maybe he'll die, maybe he won't. I wonder how they'd let him find out that Robert was his father... I can't think of anyone that would know and be able to tell the poor guy. Maybe he'll figure it out somehow, but maybe he won't! Maybe that's the point.

Just read what GRRM said. The WOW chapter is before last ADWD Jon chapter. GRRM does not gives his nuggets so easily, unfortunately.

The Ramsay's letter says he's dead, so it is very probably a lie . I was just saying that we don't know the truth for certain, beacuse we have no proof.

Then Edric or Gendry will probably be written as his heir, if he is, which is very unlikely as Ramsay is probably just trying to spite Jon.

I don't know, Shireen is here and Stannis clearly proclaimed her his heir, and even if she dies , Gendry is just a simple peasant(okay, apprentice smith and "knight"). What would he know of ruling? I'm sure he'd never even want to rule. Stannis isn't a fool, he will prepare his heir for rule. Edric Storm reminds me too much of Robert, but what do we know... at least he's educated and acquinted with Shireen and Stannis. I think he might be heir someday. Let's just cross fingers that Ramsay & Freys bite the snow. (Roose too, but he's such a good villain, i'll be sorry for him as a well-written character that got offed).
