Default Error when trying to play with mod

I'm able to play the game and the expansions fine.
But when I try to play WotN I always get "Medieval 2: Total war encoutered an unspecified error and will now exit".I own both the non steam version and steam version. (Bought the Steam version just now to check)
I used to get mods to work without problems (2-3months back) but lately I have always received this error when trying to play a mod.
Sometimes reinstalling the game works since I often used to move the game between harddrives.

As I only got the WotN mod downloaded atm thats the only one I could test with.
(Tested with both steam and non steam)

FYI I had this exact mod working yesterday.

Are you trying to load a save?
Can you start a new campaign?

I'm trying to start the mod when I get the error.
I get the starting screen(if you can call it that) that says the name of the mod and then instant error.

    Have you tried reinstalling it?

    Yes, multiple times.
I've tried reinstalling Medieval Total War 2 both on the non steam version and steam version.
The campaign there and all expansions works without any errors.

But when I try to play the WotN mod I'm getting that error as it try to start up.
I don't know what could have happened after a restart of the PC but I had it running and played for some hours then why I try to start it today I get the error.
I've had the same story with the Third Age and Westeros Mods to.

The Mod itself is just extract to the mod folder and add the mod line to steam/use the bat file to get it starting.
    I've tried redownloading it also.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=353922 may possibly help.

disabling the UAC helps if using Vista or Win 7.

So Mods worked fine 2-3 months ago but now are crashing on startup? If this is a desktop have you cleaned out the case recently? Are you aware of your heat levels?

Also - you used to move the game between hard drives regularly. Did you ever do any Registry repair to make sure old calls to old installs were no longer around? That's something that would be on my short list of things to look at. Good luck!

I've always had it disable since day1.

Yup it's a desktop and it has always been working now and then.
Sometimes it worked after I rebooted the PC or reinstalled the game.

Theres not much dust in the case, the heat levels is fine. (able to play BF3, SC2 Arma 2 without problems or that my GPU goes over 72c)

I've not done a registry repair since often they are just full of bogus.
But I could ofc try one now.

    Didn't fix it =/

One thing I've noticed is that Stainless Steel is in the option for what expansion to play:

I haven't had it installed since forever =/
When I search for files I just found 2 shortcuts.

Well I finally got it working.
I did the old style of using mods with Steam.
Renamed one of the Expansion Campaigns, Americas2 and the mod folder to Americas and launched Americas from the launcher.(So it loads the mod folder instead of the expansion)

Still do the Stainless Steel thing could interfere, maybe thats why I get the error when trying to use the Bat of the mod?

The Stainless Steel entry is still in the registry and being read by the game to remove it, use Squid's tool I linked or regedit or Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

Oh thought it was a UAC thread you linked to up there. (had multiple tabs open)
I the tool but theres no Stainless Steel there, I did run a registry cleaner before and the option is still there.

The tool just duplicated every expansion/campaign.

Is there a thread that guides you when using regedit?

Yeah I thought so to in the early stages, but theres not even a Medieval 2 folder there.
I do have Empire, Napoleon and Shogun.

Where do I find these Installshield entries?

I also had a look around in the regedit files but the Medieval files i found there was only shortcuts i think.

Look in your Windows folder in your OS drive. It should have the entries there in a separate folder.

Could the Launcher be getting the SS entries from somewhere else maybe? Look in Appdata - maybe that section needs a scrub? Good luck!

I know of no FAQ of any kind for using regedit. I just try to use a little common sense with it. Maybe something in its help files but that would be the only one I know.

Have you checked the Installshield entries? You need to use Notepad to open the .ini files.
