    Default Technologies

    What do you think about technologies in this engine?

    For me, in the first part, for historical references, we have to make an advance for china (this group of countries was advanced in this domain during this period)

    Also, i think that they should divide in several categorizes :

    => Military
    ==> Military infantry
    ==> Military archery
    ==> Military cavalry
    ==> Military navy
    ==> Defenses
    => Economics
    ==> Trade with other countries
    ==> Money
    => Governments
    ==> Laws
    ==> Type of governments
    ==> Corruption
    => Civil
    ==> Medecine
    ==> Philosophy
    ==> ...
    ==> Industry

    As you know, in this period china was the leader of technologies in the world. See a documentary of china history for more information about it

    What do you think about the political government allowed by government technologies?

    Its not really a 'technology' in the way Civilization series makes it a technology. Celts did not lack awareness of Republics having traded with Romans, Carthage, Greeks, etc for centuries but starting from a tribal confederation without a single centralizing power any changes made are difficult as the temporary weakness of making the changes makes the tribe who is trying to advance vulnerable against the other tribes. Similarly with the Greek states it took centuries for many political advancements due to conflicts where if a revolutions occurred in one state other nearby states tried to take advantage.

    Technologies were important in this era but most of the time technology diffused fairly rapidly and widely. The main obstacles to implementing new technologies weren't lack of knowledge but lack of political or cultural institutions to adopt the new technology. In this example the Romans having been situation in central Mediterranean and adopted culture from Etruscans, Greeks, Celts, and the Italian tribes native cultures were equipped politically to accept new technology but even for them it wasn't easy. Rome usually went about changing especially military technology only after major defeats. Aside from construction most other kinds of technology is much more difficult to track.

    I'd prefer simply that technology was able to be unlocked as a function both of time and implemented as a function of the political system a faction operates under. IE- large scale military reforms could only be rapidly instituted when under a Monarchy, Republic, or Empire- confederations, leagues, and other more divided types of governments would have trouble ordering and carrying out large changes in style and training of military units. Similarly if there are maritime Republics they would be able to implement naval technology changes the quickest but that wouldn't prevent other factions with different government types from doing the same changes, just at a slower or more expensive pace.

    So what do you suggest we replace it with? The idea of going back to buildings being linked with tech directly is stupid as well.

    I liked the tech tree in ETW( I haven't played STWII) alot, so I would like to actualy see how will the work a tech tree for this era.

    As you know, in this period china was the leader of technologies in the world. See a documentary of china history for more information about it
    I still don't get your answer, what are you pointing to ?

    He's saying that China had superior technology during this timeframe.

    Well they might as well throw in the new world if they go for china. I'll need to look if there is any new news but they did find what appear to be roman ships off the coast of Brazil.

    Well, they were in power MUCH later than the period in which this game is going to take place. Maybe in a Dark ages/Barbarian Invasion expansion.

    They should let us push the tech trees over the limits so you can develop a steam punk tech or discover gun powder.

    I don't want my technology to be so organized like you suggested, it's just not creative enough, I want more abstractness! If you guys have ever seen Weaponology they take you through the history of weapons to the present days best technology of that weapon and I'd love to see that type of technology tree.

    For example: Body Armor

    In the weaponology they talk about how armor has been used since the dawn of man, we would use overlapping pelts of fur for protection, not against the cold, but against other tribes. They go through the Bronze Age, Iron Age, development of Steel, tempering steel. All of those ages should have to be researched ( Bigger factions like Rome, Greece, Carthage, Ect would have a head start [NOT A BIG ONE] ) while smaller factions would start with nothing researched yet.

    Also,

    Certain clans can start out with a 25% boost in upgrade speed along a specific tech tree branch, the Romans would probably get this bonus on Architecture/Engineering while Greece would have better Government policies ( happier populace, less corruption ), Egypt would have trade, Carthage would have Navy, ect

    I know that sounds straight from Shogun 2 but I kind of liked it

    I hate conventional tech trees. They're usually completely unrealistic and lead to stupid situations like a state in Italy developing cavalry superior to what steppe nations have.

    I'd rather see other kind of features, like lawmaking, EU style "national ideas" perhaps, and other such things. Social and military progression should be represented in more abstract concepts.

    Military technology should be largely determined by geographic location. Steppe nations could easily stay ahead in archery and especially cavalry. Italians would be ahead in flexible heavy infantry. Desert nomads would be ahead in mobility over deserts, light infantry and camel use. Hellenized regions would have an advantage in Alexandrian warfare and its developments, etc. Iranian region would have an advantage in heavy cavalry and archery. If you, as a Roman, conquer lots of iranian territories, such conquests would help your development of archery and cavalry developments. If you conquer lots of Hellenic regions as Parthia, you could develop your own pike armies, integrating Alexandrian technology. If you conquer Italy as Greeks, you could invest in Italian-style flexible heavy infantry. Basically, you could learn from the geographic areas you conquer.
