Default Rome Total Realism 7 and Roma Surrectum 2 won't install "installation already in progress"

I searched the forums and Google for anything relevant to my problem, and couldn't find anything, so I'm posting my problem here and hoping someone can help.

I just installed Rome: Total War Gold Edition from disc and patched it to 1.6, downloaded Rome Total Realism, Europa Barbarorum, and Roma Surrectum, and tried installing them. I am getting an issue with the Rome Total Realism and Roma Surrectum installations where shortly after starting installation, I get a popup window saying:

    (Installer Information)
Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Edition on a new desktop PC I built (Intel i7-2700k 2nd generation, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560, 16 GB RAM) so requirements are no issue. I successfully installed Europa Barbarorum and its patch, while the other two RTW mods are refusing to install as they apparently believe there's another copy of their installation going on when I only clicked on the installers once. I think I did see something funny where the installer windows appeared to open up twice really fast, like one on top of another, but when I try to move the windows, it appears there is only one.

I figured that I just installed a whole bunch of Total War games on the new computer, so I restarted it, and the same mod installers yielded the same results. EB 1.1/1.2 worked, while RTR 7 and RS 2 balked.

I tried installing at first to a separate clean copy of BI 1.6, and then tried installing to the original directory in "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War" with the same results. Optimally I would like to install it to the separate copy of BI 1.6.

I'm a Total War veteran since the beginning of the series and I've installed other mods for Rome and Medieval 2 and Empire on other computers with NO problems, I've even installed perhaps an earlier version of RTR on a previous computer before and made some of my own little mods.

I'm not sure if you guys need a dxdiag or how to do that, I've never had to do it because I've always been able to figure out solutions to the problem or eventually find them online, but I searched and Googled the "another installation is in progress" on the internet and found NOTHING in conjunction with anything Total War related.

My appreciation for help, in advance!

(I'm posting a copy of the same thread OP over in the RTR forum as well. Technically they're a similar issue with two separate mods...)

First, if you want to install the 3 mods, you'll need to make 3 copies of your clean (with no mod installed in it) BI folder.
The best is to create a folder called "RTW mods", or just "games" directly in the root folder (c:\).
    So you would have
    c:\games\EB1.2
    c:\games\RTRVII
    c:\games\RS2.5
which, for now, should be the same, except for the name of the folder.

Once you've done that, try again the installers.

If it's still not working, you have several solutions:
-make sure your OS is up to date, as it clearly seem to be an OS issue.
-reboot your computer between two install. So if you install EB first, reboot your computer after that, and then install RTR or RS.
-you can also download RS 2.5 as a zip file if needed, so no installer.

    I hope this help.

Thank you Paedric, +1 rep for bringing me some success - I successfully installed at least RTR 7 for now. I'm not installing RS 2.5 by the way, I saw that that's a beta and has reports of errors, I just want to have some casual fun and am trying to install 2.0 instead. It was a helpful observation that the problem is operating system related, that helps narrow it down for me.

I ran Windows Update, which had 12 pending updates. I didn't run Windows updates for quite a while, a month or so, because I kept seeing my computer try to run "1 of 1" updates every time I tried to shut it down, and I guess that it was one pesky update that repeatedly fails to install. 10 of the above pending updates successfully installed, and 2 failed. So I restarted the computer, and successfully installed Rome Total Realism after some kind of alert:

"User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player'. That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue."

...which I already saw a few times before when installing other programs but which doesn't really do anything so I ignored it and just installed.

I did get a SECOND notice after that which may be noteworthy.
"An installation for NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player is currently suspended. You must undo the changes by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?"
So I clicked yes, I do have a 3D screen and card to support it but hardly use the feature anyway.

RTR successfully installed. However, Roma Surrectum 2 failed to install, even after a restart just now (and those 2 updates now failed to install).

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I think I'll go and try to address the 3D player issues there, perhaps shut down the offending process and see if it works for installing Roma Surrectum 2.

    FINALLY!!!

I basically found that any Windows installations whatsoever were having problems on my computer (because I was trying to install Java which gave me a similar error), and searched online accordingly. Some websites like the following recommended registry editing...

    (I didn't use this solution)
    http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/...error/1618.htm
(And I asked a friend what "HKLM" means, who told me it means "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" )

I wasn't comfortable with that. But I found the FOLLOWING website and solution:

    http://sherylcanter.com/wordpress/20...s-but-its-not/

That's much easier, doesn't involve tinkering around in the registry, and gets right to it, with a minimal number of steps involved.

Now, such a problem would become system-wide issue not just restricted to that of installing RTW mods. I hope everyone takes note of this Windows Installer problem so that they know what to do about it and have the link available for anyone who has this problem again in the future.

While installing RS 2, I had the same notification messages as when installing RTR 7 above:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
"User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player'. That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue."

...which I already saw a few times before when installing other programs but which doesn't really do anything so I ignored it and just installed.

I also get a SECOND notice after that.
"An installation for NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player is currently suspended. You must undo the changes by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?"
So I just clicked yes and continued with the installation.

I'll have to look into these notifications which I saw happen with a few previous installations involving Windows Installer on my computer and resolve this NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player issue that I have, in the long run. Anyway, thanks everyone. Now I can enjoy RS.
