I think the charge bonuses are realistic and good enough. It's mostly cavalry that's good at charging, since they have the size, strenght and weight of their horses to trib and trample footmen. Heavier cavalry of course has better charge due to armor and can roll over many units easily, but even they aren't invincible.
It's just that in reality cavalry - even heavy one - isn't anything godlike on the battlefield. Surely it's useful and extremely efficient when used properly AND supported by other units.
As for your other question: charges are more efficient if the cavalry unit comes in a tight formation that penetrates the enemy line. They simply have a better chance at breaking the lines if they come in together. Also, if the unit would charge from very long distances the enemy would be able to avoid the charge, since while charging, the unit loses quite a bunch of it's manuevarability. Besides, I've seen my cavalry doing charges from quite afar anyway and they do have pretty solid charge bonuses aswell. Maybe you are simply using poor quality cavalry?
I was using some infantry in the battle and I didn't mean really long distance but lets say the enemy unit was halfway towards my army then that's when both units would then charge not when they are really close up if that makes sense
Well infantry isn't really used for charging, infantry is more for toe-to-toe fighting![]()
Because with high charge distances charges don't turn out well a lot of the time.

I do really like this mod though just hope it doesn't go funny and start having bugs on it
Well bugs can occur in vanilla too and any mod is always little bit more unstable than vanilla, so bugs can and probably will occur at some point, BUT SS 6.4 is IMO extremely stable when compared to many other great mods. For example I've experienced only two CTDs during my time with SS 6.4. Can't say so for many other mods![]()
The lower charge distance is realistic as since the bronze age armies rarely charge screaming from 100 yards apart. If the advance is a charge and not performed in ordered ranks usually only the last few meters are charged so they don't arrive exhausted or give the enemy time to see what is coming.
I personally don't agree with the really low charge for all the infantry because some infantry should be able to charge a bit better though changing that requires working on most of the EDU in a consistent way.
