    Default Slavery

Slavery was a massive part of antiquity. Almost every nationality had slaves, from Greeks, to Celts, to Romans. But how would this be implemented in the game?

Of course, there should be slaves gathered through conquest - optional of course. Perhaps forcing prisoners from a battle into slavery as well. Should these slaves be used to simply boost population, or also an increasing amount of slaves would alter the government, economy, finances, and construction rates as well?

How do you think slavery should affect factions and how should slaves be gathered?

I would like this simply because it is realistic. If the game is to show an unbias (non-political correct but historically correct) account. It should also be noted though I think that there was not as much slave labour in Roman provinces as one might think. I remember reading that farming in Roman provinces was primarily a citizens job not a slaves. It was a minority of farms that used slaves apparently.

Not saying slaves were not a large part, just saying the filthy rich portrayed in hollywood make it seem exaggerated.

I remember the original Rome1 did at least have slaves as a resource indicated by the chains icon in some provinces.

I would like to see slave revolts and the ability for slaves to gain their freedom become freedmen.

Mainly in the early Republic. As Rome's wealth grew, however, much of Italia was ruled by the wealthy, and worked by massive amounts of slaves, leading to a serious crisis. From what I recall reading at least.

Slaves might give a boost in production/income but also incur a cost in public order requiring more legions to be garrisoned internally compared to a more level society like Germanic tribes. If a state shifts too much of its economy to benefit from slaves then there should be large disruptions if the supply is disrupted(lost some wars, trade routes disrupted).

However from design point of view I think adding a class of population like slaves would be rather difficult and probably not worth the effort. Ideally for me RTW2 will represent slaves simply as a choice after battles or sacks/capture of regions between temporary increase of income vs longer term less productive region which is captured. So enslaving losers after a battle probably has the least ill effects though perhaps chance for some bad traits for commander/army where greed is more important than service to the state. Enslaving population of captured regions should be a rougher choice- offering immediate public order benefit and income but longer term loss of income(less population) and unrest(revenge against the invaders).

I'd love to see the slave trade and such being realistically portrayed in the game. But I'm not sure how willing CA/Sega are on touchy subjects.

RTW did a pretty good job with slaves. Could always improve though, like being able to turn captured enemy troops into slaves.

I find this ironic considering how touchy war should be as a subject. Alas sometimes war is necessary.

This is only really a touchy subject in America, but even so you don't see US movies and TV shows skirt the issue when it comes to the Roman era, so why should CA?

I would love to see a well developed simulation of slavery, I like the ideas that Ichon put forward. I'd like to see slave rebellions fleshed out a bit more, I always loved seeing those gladiator uprisings back in Rome 1 even though it was kind of silly.

As the empire expanded and the rich were well insulated from the borders they became more domesticated and decadent . Slowly losing there ability to fight.

Two this I would certainly like to see:

    • The ability to sale the population of a captured settlement into slavery.
The ability to sale captured prisoners from a battle into slavery.

Julius Caesar made a tremendous amount of wealth from all the Gauls he sold into slavery.

Slavery still exists in Africa and then we got sex slaves of today. If anyone gets burt hurt, point to history. Africans sold fellow Africans to Westerns and don't forget about the Barbey (sp?) were Westerns were sold into slavery by Africans.

I don't see how African slaves have anything to do with slaves in the ancient age, were slave were picked indiscriminately. Maybe you should go complain in the EmpireTW board for not including African slaves.

On topic, why not? anything that brings a extra layer of complexity is welcomed by me.

They were in a way. A social advancement you could unlock was the abolition of slavery.

With slavery abolished you wont get those discontent out of work roman citizens which later leads to the cration of standing army, the legions that we know.

The way is was done in RTW is fine with regards to slavery. However to feature slaves as traded item probably wont be.

How slavery should be put in

When capturing a settlement one option should be to enslave the population, a chunk is sent back to settlements with governors.

Prisoners of war can be turned into slaves.

Slaves were either used in mines, working on farms that grew cash crops, ex. Slaves were rarely used for something that needed for human life such as farming food and were used for either making money or public service jobs.

So slaves should give a bonus to a settlements income, since they were great at making people rich in the form of free labor. However the obvious problem with a slave is he/she wants to be free, so public order penalties should be given.

At one point Romes slave population may have reached as high as 30% but when the Romans found it harder and harder to expand and capture more they started to pass laws to make it harder for masters to free slaves and make it illegal to kill slaves, maybe slaves should be an important economic factor, it certainly was for the Romans.

Indiscriminate? I thought the americans always chose the biggest africans kinda breeding a big race actually in america?

Gaulish slaves were apparently sought after by the romans as tutors for their children according to another thread.

But if you mean in terms of capturing whatever and seeing what you can get for them I guess that happened too.

Sort of not relevant and a bit random. There were other slaves then africans... moving on.
I think the implemented of slavery would be awesome. They usually came from across the Sahara in the Kingdoms in western Africa so if there could be a little trade icon to get slaves from there that would be cool. Also in Egypt and Nubia or Kush Kingdom

I'm saying people cant complain about slavery because it still happens today, and its documented through out history. Resident Evil 5 got a lot of slack from people because it happened to be set in Africa, and it happened to be the people you killed were black.
