Default Anyone focus on combat skills in their Generals?

Like melee stats, defense, etc? Up to this point I had been just focusing on the army improvement skills, but have recently been trying to create some roleplay generals who fight from the front.

Has anyone else done this and have you found it made your Generals considerably more durable?

I only tend to do it when using Darthmod, as he re-balances it so you get better bonuses, but in vanilla I sometimes use it for my daimyo/heir or if my General has a good armour upgrade already. The one problem I found was that if you make a combat focused general, you then want to send him into combat more often. The more often you send them into combat = the more likely they are to die.

Yeah, I've been using them in the line, but just behind the other troops. That way they avoid archer fire, but still close with the enemy in time.

also worth noting that some of the upgrades are better than others. Morale isn't really necessary as you don't want them to be taking so many casualties that they end up routing in the first place.

IMO you want to turn all your non family members into combat generals. The rest go strategist and usually grab stand and fight and poetry, religion and the next one that gives your men more morale or max out your attack points with the next two parts of the stand and fight thingy. Also you do not appoint non family members with commissions.

The logic is you do not care if non family members die, and you don't want family members getting jealous.

There's a mod that gives 7XP to any supporting generals, meaning that if you have a surplus, attach them to armies and use them as upgradable katana cavalry.

In Medieval it was fun, but for Shogun 2 getting the troops to the battlefield in time and keeping them there is more important campaign wise.

I usually give my daimyo and heir the defensive skills rather than the movement skills, so they survive better, but after that I move towards getting the skill that gives honor. The comisioners I give the movement and command skills to.

I tend to do it for some of my generals depending on their armour (if it looks brute etc.) and depending in which situations they find themselves in during the first battles or so. Makes for great roleplay thinking that "oh, ok now I'm going to fight a battle with this general who is known to be a warrior-general, then I'll throw him into the mess because that's how he would have done!" and with other generals that look more sophisticated I might put points on leadership instead and let them stand their ground behind your lines. Makes for great roleplay, having different generals with different personalities etc. (Ofcourse you tend to "cheat" with save/load not to lose the characters you've gotten so attached to. But still it's a game and you do it for fun, right?)

I agree with the earlier comment. None family generals are my combat generals or lead the second force of my army should I split them up.
