Okay, upon viewing the promotional material that CA has released so far, it's clear they have finally completed their dumbing down of this series. Beach landings are absolute style over substance, the animation looks retarded, and there's no word yet of a console port, (I can't be alone in wanting to wage ancient war from my sofa!) and it seems like the minority of history nerds are getting their way in making the different factions as boring as possible.
But all this I don't care for, my real concern is not having the ability to control my population through harsh measure. The genocide option when dealing with cities was removed in Empire and it made the game unplayable, my cities would grow too large and uncontrollable. Paradox games also are guilty of removing this feature, I understand the negative implications of simulating genocide during their ww2 era games, but during antiquity and the middle ages it was too common to not be part of gameplay. Total war games are supposed to be about ruling a nation and that includes playing the role of a despot, in fact a big aspect of gaming in general is being able to live out various fantasies. Some of mine include those of destruction and apocalyptia and misuse of power. During my school years I suffered quite bad racial bullying and my only outlet was to torture my creature on that old god game, Black and White, and afterwards bought a little game called Medieval: Total War, and I loved that you could press that button to execute prisoners mid-battle, the little soundbite was awesome, bring back that option too! This is what made me fall in love with gaming.
So please CA, stay true to the classic Rome Total War game, you got mostly everything right back then,
the vivid colour schemes were stupid I guess.
