A volley of thousands of pila is enough to destroy any army's morale.

You don't see the severed arms, human entrails and body parts strewn over the battlefield and you won't smell the pervading stench of human excrement that was involuntarily released or spilled out when soldier's abdomens were opened up.

Warfare in the ancient period wasn't pretty.

actually, warfare wasnt, isnt, and wont be pretty. i think its just me but i have never seen a war fought with flowers loaded to your gun and you shoot them to love the enemy, and the projectile trails are also rainbows. grenades blow up with exquisite perfumes, which delights your enemy

The ancient period was worse as there was tens of thousands of men dying in a single battle. Blood and guts everywhere.

Mass amounts of men never really died that often in Battles. The U.S civil war and the World wars are the first where thousands of men actually died in battle's frequently

Looking at something like Cannae, I guess we can say that the ancient period might have had worse DAYS, but (outside of sieges, where it was probably much the same) modern day had worse weeks, months, and years.

The battle of kursk featured a million casualties, fighting alongside thousands upon thousands of tanks, aircraft, and stationary defenses creating an environment as close to the mental image of hell as you can probably get. That's like the entire 17 years of the second punic war, all rolled up into a little over a month; and that war lasted a lot longer than just a month.

I dunno man, the early romans died a lot and killed a lot. After Carthage it was mostly clean sailing for a while, outside of some genocides here or there, but there are plenty of abttles where thousands died. I guess they mistly died while retreating, though.

    Wars will never be pretty.

But they can come close with higher resolutions and a good graphics card...

The TRUE darkness of Roman fighting was actually a politcal decision to use the troops of recently conquered foe to attack a new enemy!! .. This would have to be ultimate mafia "plague" political decision ever made!

Not Dark...but quite dirty...and excruciatingly painful...
I want to see some of this move:

1 - Use When Locked in a Shield Push
2 - Assume Scuta Tollite Position
    3 - Locate Enemy Foot
4 - Slam Scutum at the toes of the unfortunate adversary
5 - Relieve Their Pain using Gladius.

What should we call this technique...if it supposed to have a name, hmmm?
