Default Continuity between strat map and battlefield

One thing I didn ' t like much about sequela of Rome tw was the abandoning of real reflection of the map on field and map on strategy .... I hope CA. Will focus on reintroducing that feature back and not feed us with the same region for each different region .... But give the battlefield exactly where the armies are placed , so if I end the movement of my armies on a hill I expect to be able to fight upphill and not entering the map from a side or another position .....

Actually, they had this pretty well in Shogun 2, if I recall correctly.

Yeah. It was in Shogun 2, but they just weren't that interesting.

I agree with Prometheus that strategic and tactical gameplay must be brought closer together. At turn-end you must be able to station your army in a position that makes sense on the battlemap. The idea that you don't find out what your surroundings are until the battle has loaded is not acceptable (unless, of cours, you're actually being ambushed).

It depends on which part of Japan you fight on.

That was really the main thing, in that game. It was just Japan. You didn't see a difference like you would if you were fighting over the entirety of Europe, for example.

What? when facing a superior stack I often split my forces in the Campaign Map, so the reinforcement pop up behind the enemy in The Battle Map...

I am not saying it doesnt reflect the surrounding or the strat but that gives always the same size and borders of the map regardless where u position your troops in Rome when I placed a unit on a hill it stayed on hill , in shogun not...

Rome did a better job at this then any of the warscape games. FOTS did a pretty decent job but it still can be improved on that's for sure.

I think it would be nice if they would implement far more better ambush system, on strat map you can choose location and also some sort of preview of battle terrain, especially useful for those that itend to play with weaker factions

Oh, I got it... the position of the battle map is based on a giant battlemap of Japan, basically, The Campaign map in Battlemap ...its big...but not big enough...So The Game puts borders on a viable patch of land than makes it the Battlemap...but its dont always work properly...it tends to pick "designated standard maps" if the Campaign map position is too extreme...to avert several too-extreme maps like in M2TW

...Not to mention S2TW Siege Maps...

Yeah in Shogun 2 when you would fight a siege battle twice the castle and map looked different each time I agree that it should be closer to the actual campaign map again.
"Pompeius, after having finished the war against Mithridates, when he went to call at the house of Poseidonios, the famous teacher of philosophy, forbade the lictor to knock at the door, as was the usual custom, and he, to whom both the eastern and the western world had yielded submission, ordered the fasces to be lowered before the door of science."

Seige battles were each pre-generated, yes. But field battles were all different.

If there is one thing I would like the Total War series to adopt as an overarching design goal it is to tie the strategic and battle maps closer together. Simply, because in my mind, the connection between these to game types is what makes Total War. I've never played the old risk-style total wars but sometimes I feel that new engines don't really offer much more in terms of strategic options. You manly gather an army, click on a city, attack once they get there, rinse and repeat. Hopefully this new province system and the changes to the campaign AI will increase this. It might also be cool if once your army marching the camera zoomed in to a more detailed views of the surrounding region and you could pick where to place your army. Sort of like the deployment phase, except you would have a wider area to choose from, and you would be placing your army as a whole, not individual unites This way you can better choose the area your armies fight in, and it may add a greater sense of strategic maneuvering on the grander level.

Field battles "seemed" to be randomly generated, but in fact weren't, I can say there were numerous times where I fought battles in different provinces that had the exact same terrain, down to all the formations of the hills and the trees. They weren't generated depending on where you were, but rather, which one of the pre-generated ones resembled where you were the most.

I agree with the OP. The battlefield should portray the terrain and location of where your army is in a country.
If you are in forest and marsh part of a country thats the terrain you should be fighting in. Same with mountain regions, Or on large grassland area,s.
The battlefield should reflect this detail.

The old RTW had this just right.
