It's a long time that I find the system of deployables a bit frustrating, for 3 reasons:
-you can deploy them only in the deployment zone, it obliges you to camp in your deployment zone after.
-you can only deploy short lines of deployables, that's limits what you can do.
-there are too few items in deployables.
WHAT I PROPOSE:
-You can build deployables everywhere in the battlefield, but troops have to build them (we need an animation, digging etc) and it takes time to these troops, they can't fight while constructing and can be attacked.
-No limitation in the size of the deployables but the biggest is your line of deployables, the longest it is to build. This feature would be specially adapted for sieges.
-more items to build: we can find in antiquity and roman history a lot of items that should be constructed, look for example to the roman's siege works of Alesia. We can imagine that some troops are specialised in construction, for example a unit of siege engineers that could build more complicated items than the vanilla ones. we can also imagine that a unit of engineers under the command of the general could activate options for each units of the army to build things.
This period counts a lot of sieges, that could really add something to the game if you can build you own lines of defenses, the ennemy trying to attack you before they are finished etc.
AI should also use these items.
Some example of items we could build:
1/testudos or ramp (imagine your soldiers constructing a ramp under the arrows and rocks throwen by ennemies)
2/ works of siege around a city
3/construct your own legion camp, it could provide unlimited munitions for the archers and machines. Or you could build it before the battle begins and choose to defend it in an hostile zone.
