Default Cavalry need the option to dismount

Anyone who has assaulted a city knows how much cavalry suck at that. I don't think I am going out on a limb by saying that guys on horseback probably would have dismounted when the situation called for it. After all, no one was epoxied to the back of their horse. It is frustrating having a cavalry army besieging a town but not being able to attack it because no one wants to get off their horse and carry siege equipment.

Anyone know why this feature has appeared discontinuously throughout the series? I believe MTW1 and Shogun2 are the ones that have it, begging the question of why the titles in between don't.

They have had that options for all Warscape titles so far since ETW until Shogun 2 so yes I'm sure it will still be there for Rome II.

Cavalry in cities is actually fairly useful quite often but I would be very surprised if cavalry couldn't dismount as has been pointed out that is a feature since ETW. I would love to see a feature where cavalry pulled a couple infantry along at a faster speed until they let go of the saddle as well. Several ancient peoples would have a single cavalryman help a couple infantry move along faster than they could simply running on their own.

It is good opinion for sieges/ambushes, but i read somewhere that Roman cavalry got punishment if they abandon their horses... True?
Apologies for anyone who's message i may miss or not be able to answer

Yes. They will be punished if they don't sleep with their horses.

Depends on the battle. In field battles of course not since they will cease to be cavalry. Roman cavalry (I mean actual Romans - Equites) are usually use for scouting and messengers. The bulk of cavalry used in battles are from the ales and auxilias (depending on time period).

Oh yeah! Isn't what they did anyway?

Usually two persons rode in the chariot. The charioteer sat in the open front of the chariot and actually drove. The warrior stood behind the charioteer and threw his spears from the chariot before alighting and fighting on foot. The charioteer stayed close enough to retrieve his warrior and carry him away from the battle if he were wounded or killed. This system is well documented in the Irish Ulster Cycle, as well as in the works of Roman and Greek historians.

That's what Caesar tells us, anyway, in Book IV of his Commentary on the conquest of Gaul:

'In chariot fighting the Britons begin by driving all over the field hurling javelins, and generally the terror inspired by the horses and the noise of the wheels are sufficient to throw their opponents' ranks into disorder. Then, after making their way between the squadrons of their own cavalry, they jump down from the chariots and engage on foot. In the meantime their charioteers retire a short distance from the battle and place the chariots in such a position that their masters, if hard pressed by numbers, have an easy means of retreat to their own lines. Thus they combine the mobility of cavalry with the staying power of infantry...'

Yep, I'm pretty sure it will be in the game, Roman cavalry often fought at foot. Just look at the Battle of Cannae were both sides jump off their horses and go into a mele.
"Pompeius, after having finished the war against Mithridates, when he went to call at the house of Poseidonios, the famous teacher of philosophy, forbade the lictor to knock at the door, as was the usual custom, and he, to whom both the eastern and the western world had yielded submission, ordered the fasces to be lowered before the door of science."
