    Default I want a screen.

Ok Boys, help me out, I am very dum when it comes to hardware. I have had the same little laptop since 2005. It is a old Zepto and nothing is wrong with it really, It have survived saltwater, cocolate and so much else. But as I am living the same place now and don't move around all the time anymore I'd like something good. SO!!

I like to play games. Or I have started playing games after joining this forum. And thus I'd like to play the new rome game on a HUGE screen for example .My old friend Princess Zepto is much too old for something like that.

And I like to have My Pictures look good.

So. A Huge HUGE screen. 1900 x 1400 is too small. I Want it above 2000 and... About 2-5 MS. Please Help. My eyes are red reading and trying to understand all the necessary things one need to know to buy a proper Monitor.

    Halp Please!

The largest display resolution you will find is usually 1920x1080. Some are 2560x1440 but they can be a bit expensive. Its best to stick with a 1920x1080 display and find a monitor that is the right size. If you have a store like Bestbuy around, you can go there and find a television that is the right size for you. Most televisions today are 1080p which is 1920x1080. Check to see what connectors your computer has. If its an old one that is blue, its a VGA. If its newer it is probably a white DVI cable. If its a VGA, it may not be able to support high resolutions so you will need to upgrade your computer or buy a converter.

Thank you for the reply. I am actually looking for a 2560x1440 screen. Price is not a matter.

You will presumably be getting a high end desktop as well to be able to run anything at that resolution?

The essentially 'perfect' monitor you are after doesn't quite exist, because almost all panels with that resolution (WQHD) will be an IPS screen. IPS gives excellent colours and will make photos and games look great. However, it's response time simply isn't as good as cheap TN panels, which is what most gamers who don't need more than 1080p will have. I haven't seen an IPS screen with less than 5ms, so you will have to do without going as low as 2ms. Saying that, the top end ones do quote 5ms, although this isn't everything, depending on how it is measured. However, if mainly playing rts games rather than very fast moving fps, you probably won't notice the difference.

The Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D seems to get very good reviews: http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors...nt;contentBody (no hdmi though if this is an issue).

As does the Dell UltraSharp U2711: http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors...nt;contentBody

Looking at Newegg, the only monitor size you can get for 2560x1440 is 27" If you choose 2560x1600 you will get a 30" monitor. If you want a large monitor, the only resolution you will get is 1920x1080. For me, I would rather go with a 42" monitor at 1920x1080 than a 30" monitor at 2560x1600 but it depends on your setup.

If you choose the large monitor you can do what my friend did. He bought a 55 inch television and put it in his family room as his normal television, but brought out his computer and hooked it up to the tv and the surround sound. Then he used a wireless keyboard and mouse and played games from his couch.

    ^ what this guy said.

I switched to a 37" vizio last year that was 1920 x 1080 and have never looked back. To be frank with you. I would never go back to anything under 37" even if it was 555500000 x 2700000

Now I run on a 47" and a 40" dual screens. Sure its only 60hz and its only 1920x1080 but I can READ the screen clearly and unlike what people were saying I don't see any pixels AT ALL.

Pay for a good HDTV (Samsung is my recommendation) and use HDMI to make it your monitor.

It's quite possible that your laptop cannot support a resolution that high. Do you know what video chip it has in it?

Thank you all for the replys. Uhhmm I am getting a normal computer, but it is easier to read about that on the internet I've found. Reading about screens and fining a good one is much more challenging. And Itd be awesome if there is a 2560x1600 screen, though I won't buy a television.

All TVs suck and they cannot provide any resolution higher than 1080p, no matter how expensive they are.

2560x1600 only exists in high-end IPS monitors. They're reportedly bad for gaming and many times more expensive than the best of consumer-class monitors:

    Dell UltraSharp 30": US$1,300+
    EIZO FlexScan SX3031W-BK - 30": US$2,900+

(They can never have 2ms response time, more like 20+)

I have no prior experience with IPS, but my monitor uses AVMA which is between IPS and common TN, and I can tell you basically you wouldn't want to play fast-paced FPS games with it, because the shadow/tail problem on moving characters is very serious (definitely hurts your score).

you can look at the 27'' monitors, from dell, hp, apple, toshiba, nec, those use the same panel with some variants. Be it either 8 or 10 bit. Eizo is the best that you can find, but that is for pro designers that need color accuracy and depth

I got a late 2010 27' iMac that uses that screen Mr MM talks about and it's incredible good. The viewing angles are so good that you will hate most other screen you see.
Apple sells the display on it's own as well http://www.apple.com/displays/
Not only does it look good, it also comes with the connectors to MacBooks, thunderbolt connectors and speakers. I'd still buy a iMac over one of these but if you want a good consumer screen this one is one of the better out there.

I disagree on buying the imac now. They are due a revision this year, and Im hoping that they put a 680m in there, which is a downclocked 670m, with some overclock you can reach the performance levels of the 670m around 7200 3d mark11 points. Not shabby. They could also put a 7970m which is a slight downclocked 7870, meaning with some OC you can still reach 7k+ 3dmark11 points.

So yeah those gpus are a good thing to be put in a thin all in one design that the imac is.

I like the idea of the thunderbolt display, it can act as a dock for people like me that only use notebooks. So its extremely handy.

and the viewing angles on those screens are that good because they are IPS, its around 172 degrees of viewing angle.

Yes I agree. But I'd wait for that rather than buying the cinema display myself as you get so much more for your money with the iMac package.

depends where you live... RMBP costs U$5k here, the imacs are priced very similar to that, the ACD is ''only'' US1.5k

I have seen it as low as 5MS, is it still a problem with that?

No. But first you need to make sure it's real 5ms.... I know they have some compensation tech but it's useless IMHO.

Perhaps you could ask the store staff to try fast FPS games on it, see if there are tails or shadows behind moving characters.
