Re: Books about Rome and the Hellenic world
I haven't read much about Rome recently being much more interested in parts further east but the most interesting book I can remember reading in the last couple of years was- http://www.amazon.com/Scipio-African...m_cr_pr_sims_t
Maybe best paired with http://www.amazon.com/Hannibals-War-...nnibal%27s+War to get an idea of two perspectives.

Re: Books about Rome and the Hellenic world
The Makers of Ancient Strategy recently came out. I'm re-reading it. A lot of great essays by a variety of experts.

Legionary: The Roman Soldier's (Unofficial) Manual
by Philip Matyszak
I found this while on holiday in England. It was a day trip to hadrin's wall and I picked it up at a giftshop near a Roman fort. Read it in 3 days but it was very entertaining and I learned a great deal.

Re: Books about Rome and the Hellenic world
I usually recommend the Osprey series, but they're really specialized. Peter Connolly's Greece and Rome at War has both the breadth and depth needed for an overall glimpse at the Roman war machine.
