    Default 2vs1 outnumbered

why is it that all barbarian units are set to higher men per unit than the roman factions?
It puts me at an almost 2 to 1 disadvantage every single battle (not even counting on reinforcements)
And the cavalry is twice as many men as an equites unit.

Is this normal and if so, I'd like to change it... but how? (i feel myself like an idiot in the data folder)

Its done because if you use correct tactics and build true legions the Barbarians wont stand a chance. ;-) I suggest looking on this forum for info on House rules and different advice on how to play SPQR. SPQR battle mimic realism in Battles very well, atleast to the engines abilities. Romes Armies were usually outnumbered in real life anyway. The game will be no challenge if you make Romans have more men or the Barbarians have less, infact you will cause Balance issues throughout the game. BTW are you playing on Large or Huge settings?

Most likely to represent the 'Barbarian Horde' and their numeral superiority. (Barbarians, they breed like rabbits!)

Okay, go to your data folder inside Rome - Total War, open 'export_descr_unit.txt'.
You'll see a lot of units like this one (mind you, this is from another mod)
    Code:
    type barb peltast gaul
    dictionary barb_peltast_gaul2 ; Skirmisher Warband
    category infantry
    class            missile
    voice_type Light_1
    soldier barb_peltast_gaul, 60, 0, 0.9
    mount_effect elephant +6, chariot +6
    attributes sea_faring, hide_improved_forest, hide_long_grass, no_custom
    formation 1.6, 2, 3.2, 4, 3, square
    stat_health 1, 0
    stat_pri 11, 4, javelin, 65, 8, thrown, archery, piercing, spear, 25 ,0.75
    stat_pri_attr thrown, ap
    stat_sec 6, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, knife, 25 ,0.75
    stat_sec_attr no
    stat_pri_armour 1, 2, 2, flesh
    stat_sec_armour 0, 0, flesh
    stat_heat 2
    stat_ground 4, -4, 6, 4
    stat_mental 8, low, untrained
    stat_charge_dist 30
    stat_fire_delay 0
    stat_food 60, 300
    stat_cost 1, 220, 110, 30, 40, 220
    ownership gauls, slave
The bolded number in the red line shows how much soldiers there are per unit when playing on normal settings (presumably).

So if you want this particular unit (barbarian skirmishers) to have half as many men, you change the red line to
    Code:
    soldier barb_peltast_gaul, 30, 0, 0.9
Take some time to experiment and welcome to TWC!

Trust me the gauls are not very tough if you play by house rules, it is stickied in the forums. The romans have better morale and discipline anyway.

Numbers don't really matter that much...be more concerned at the number of units they have and the experience of those units...Roman units are hardy and will rarely break and rout.

as Lt has said, don't change the barbarian numbers, it'll get far, far too easy if you are playing the Romans. The only barbarians you really have to watch out for are the Germanic Chosen Axemen

Yep, don't change the numbers, one it adds to the realism which is all-important in this mod and second, it adds more off a challenge, because lets face it, a Roman Republican or Imperial legion with the right commander i.e. you and the right tactics(see SPQR readme file in your Rome file, some helpful hints from LT against any barbarian army and you'll get a massacre

Enjoy the mod Tankbuster, tis ace!!
    Cheers
