Most of the time on this forum I hear alot a bs about Russia propegated by purspofuly misinforming or willfully ignorant western media about the state of liberty in the Russian Federation. Well today I was reading in Russia's unfree and totally state-controlled press and I found a real threat to civil liberties in Russia titled: Russian State Duma Bill 89417. Federal Law about Information designed to get this "protect children." Yes Russian Duma is basically Rev Lovejoy's wife screaming "think of the children!" down the streets of Moscow after looking at a webpage while some gopnik from the provinces is banging two stung out whores 1 city block away with his 13 year old smoking a filterless cigarette and watching. Basically the law creates a blacklist of internet sites that do the following:
The Registry Operator would links to websites or domain names containing:
- Child pornography
- Promoting the use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances
- Promoting the use of precursor of drugs (acetone, potassium permanganate, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid)
- Information, "prompting the children to commit acts which threaten their lives and (or) health";
- Any other information which is prohibited to spread in Russia, by the decisions of courts.
As well there was something about extremism. The definition of extremism in Russia has been abused in the past multiple times. I also really like the "think of the children" element in Russia. By the time we are five Russian children have seen and felt things a first-worlder hasn't. Last thing Russian children need protection from is spooky information.
As a result the Russian version of wikipedia has been shut down like the company did in the English language section when US Congress was toying around with SOPA.
Here is the link to English language translation of the Bill for your reading enjoyment:
Interesting to note though that this bill is getting criticism from the Al Gore of Russia- Dimitry Medvedev. According to him language is very bad and does not address the root of the social problem. Making it very subjective and bad for internet business. It has also come under fire by the Communications Minister of the Russian Federation. So at least it does seem that the bill does have some enemies in high places.
