    Default The statue from Carthage

    Hi,

I have a question: Why is the statue of Poseidon (or Zeus) in Carthage? Shouldn't it be in Greece?

How do you know who it is? It's a statue of a guy and it's too far away to tell who it is IMO.

Maybe they were just trying to show off as much as possible, and it's just a placeholder? But good question, I wondered the same...

I'm no expert on Phoenician/Carthaginian culture, but would it be too much to assume that they simply appreciated the style and copied it for a work of their own?

There are quite a few famous statues and landmarks we haven't seen today. Most large cities had temples and statues to more than a few gods. Personally I think it looks good and many of the gods called by different names shared characteristics. El was father of the gods while Zeus, Posidion, etc were his sons. Phoencians borrowed many elements of arts from Greeks and versa just as arts always borrow and influence each other. That statue doesn't seem too out of place to me other than the artist might have hewed too closely to other statues we know about but just having a statue of that style doesn't seem incredibly wrong.

Right, Carthage had their own religion which came from the religions of the levant(the area between antolia and egypt) with different twist depending on the local areas with their gods being Baal-Hammon, Tanit, Mot and ect.

Yamm is considered god of the Sea although im not exactly sure what a statue of it would look like so its kinda hard to tell whether thats supposed to be him or not.

Although the Carthaginians did infact borrowed many Greek religious symbols and motifs from them so that may infact very well be Poseidon.

Heres a pic of Poseidon doing the exact same pose. Looks similar imo.

If they borrowed Poseidon's function, they would use one of their own gods for that. Just like the Romans used their own names for other cultures' gods. So that might be Yamm, doing a Poseidon pose.

P.S. The graffiti is in Greek, from what I can discern.

True...but I'm still a little suspicious. Maybe the developers will tell us more when we get to see the demo (maybe they will comment about the statue)

Isn't the graphiti on the wall greek as well and has anyone translated it? Maybe they hired a lot of labour trained in Greece to make their Doric columns and carve their statue of Milqart.

Its based off this statue from the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, its either Zeus or Poseidon depending on whether you think the missing object from his right hand was either a lightning bolt or trident (personally I think it was the former).

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

As for if it is out of place or not, well neither Zeus or Poseidon were particularly worshipped in Carthage as the Carthaginians had their own set of gods, so it is a bit. Still Ba'al Hammon statues have similar poses so you could view it as a Hellenistic styled Ba'al statue, something very possible given the amount of contact between the Carthage and the Greeks.

The Greek graffiti is out of place too AFAIK, the Carthaginians had their own writing script, although again there were a lot of Greeks living in Carthage so its not impossible.

The romans could be taking back a city from the Carthaginians?

The statue is a famous Greek statue found near Capo Artemisio. It's in bronze and for sure is not a Carthaginian statue. It's about 480 B.C. so so sincerely I don't know why hey have used it in here. Remember that the pics are still a Wip so we can't say that is exactly Carthage in the final stage of the game.

I think it's Baal because of some of these things found at Carthage:

Statue of Baal (Looks as if the Copied the Greeks and Romans Style a bit.)

No offense, but that is Tanit. The full title of the deity is "Tan'it Pene Ba'al" and means Tanit the face of Baal, the eye upon the image of Tanit

Well, I think it looks more similar to Poseidon but tbh, a statue of Poseidon instead of Ba'al makes no sense considering their chief god was Ba'al, although they still did have a huge variety of divinities from Egypt, Greece and Italy(Etruscans) but I dont agree with it regardless.
