Setting up a blog
I've been looking in the process of setting up a blog for some time now, and now that I've figured out what to do with it, I need to organise and set it up. I want to set up a paid blog (aka not a free Wordpress or Blogspot), and through that I need to buy the domain and the hosting from a company.
So I buy the domain and the hosting. What happens next?
Can anyone enlighten me on this aspect? Who has a blog here?

Do you mean technically? You'll have to install some sort of blog software, I'm not up to date on what kind of software people use these days. You can download Wordpress and install it on your host server, I'm not sure why you would want anything else.

Technically. I understood from the hosting provider that I will have a control panel, a hidden interface of sorts, from where I can install themes and manage my blog.

Well the control panel is part of the Wordpress software. Hosting services also have control panels for uploading files, managing directors, databases and so on. You'll have to download Wordpress from http://wordpress.org/ and upload it on your server, then install it following their instructions.
Make sure your host runs PHP and MySQL. Most do.

The control panel your host provides you will be for stuff like installing databases and software packages. You will have to pick some sofware first, they will probably have Wordpress and similar programs that will install automatically. If you want something different, you will have to manually upload and configure it.

You get an account with something like Dreamhost. Then you upload your choice of blogging software to your server space. (Something like Wordpress.org) Then you run the setup, and follow the prompts. (Generally by navigating to like www.<mydomain>.com/setup.php after you've uploaded the files.) Then you can log on with the account you create, etc.
Lots of hosts also have one click installs, for instance Dreamhost does. In that case, you just click "Install Wordpress" and it will install Wordpress and update it automatically, etc.

I need a helping hand over here...
I need for the main page to switch AUTOMATICALLY, redirecting basically, to www.website.com/blog. What do I need to do in order to implement that? There's no website, the main page is blank, it's just the blog.
The blog is a Wordpress installed in the public.html subfolder (in the root), but I can't seem to get it working in any way. Tried different scripts and codes, nothing.
When I go to www.website.com, I want it to go automatically to www.website.com/blog. That's all.
Can anyone help?

Also sign up for Google Analytics and install the code on your site. For something this small it might seem like a waste of time, but it isnt. You can get all kinds of info from it, such as keywords used to find your site, and use that information when writing your headlines so that they attract more people.
If you get a decent amount of traffic going, throw a couple of small Google ads on the site and it will pay for itself.

You inspired to finally get my backside in gear and do my own. Very feeble, but I switched from Joomla and used Wordpress. Next challenge to put some decent content on and create my own template but thanks for the inspiration. +rep
