    Default A little advice

    Hello everyone,

I know that there are a few upgrade/new rig threads, but I thought that I would make this one so I did not hijack their threads. Anyhow, let me start out with my specs:

    i7 920 2.67 @ 3.6Ghz
    ASUS P6T Mobo
    ASUS HD 6950 1GB
    12GB RAM
    750 PSU Corsair

    Edit:
Here is the mobo and processor that I am thinking about upgrading to:

    Mobo:

    Processor:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116502

How long do you think that this set up would be good for?

I think that info will suffice for my question. I use my computer for work, which is web development and graphic design, and gaming. I thought that might be useful info, too.

Should I upgrade, now or wait and get a new rig? The reason why I ask is because I have been waiting for the IvyBridge CPUs to come out. I was going to upgrade my Mobo and CPU to start with and then upgrade my GPU later on down the line. I was thinking about it and I don't know if I should wait or not. I mean, my rig now pretty much does everything that I want, it is just a few years old. So, I can upgrade now or just wait and get a new one in about 18 months.

Sorry if this is a bit confusing. I guess that I just want to know if my setup now will still be relevant, for lack of a better term, for a year and a half.

Thank you for reading and thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Sincerely I wouldnt do anything, since you are telling us that you can do whatever you want with your pc, just leave it at that.

I would however look for a SSD, it should make your pc snappier, due to low access times and so forth.

I would also wait for haswell to come forward, since by then the LGA 1366 should be already 4+ year old. And you could just upgrade your gpu next year as well, leaving only the psu and case behind, and probably ram

Thanks for the reply, Mr MM. That is what I was looking for. I mean, I can play games on it now and do work, so I will wait. I think I got a little to impatient. I mean, a year and a half is a long time . However, I don't want to upgrade now and have an "old" computer already by then. And, by then, I will not need a new computer, so much as an upgrade. Cool. I will wait and upgrade my CPU, mobo and video card all at once later on down the road. Thanks again for your help!

haswell should have the same launch parameters of ivy, thus you can have a your new rig next year.

A SSD right now is a great thing to have, the price of larger models have become increasingly cheap. You can have a crucial M4 512gb for 400, or 256gb for 200, this trend is also valid for the Samsung 830, not so in the 512gb. And those are the 2 controllers to get right now. They have great reliability that usually lacks on the sandforce based controllers.

    Thanks, Mr MM!

That is exactly what I am going to do. I was looking at these two SSDs just after I read your response yesterday:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147134

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148448

One of those should do fine until I totally upgrade my rig.

    Thanks again.

those are just darn expensive right now, we have reached the 0.7 ratio right now, look for those at 90 bucks each.

If you are only going to go for windows, 120gb is usually enough, it can hold the CS package (6gb), office (4gb), windows (20-30gb) and there is still space available for some games. However be warned that the 256gb versions are usually the faster ones, I would simply grab one at that size

btw they are on sale on amazon today

well similar build to yours cept i have a 580. think am gonna keep my i7 and perhaps upgrade gpu when next nvidia card is out...

my cpu @4.2ghz should have enough juice for another yr or so...

p.s not bothering with ssd's until they get another £50 or so cheaper. i recommend watercooling for the fun and higher oc potential.

yes am not saying they arent good and most likely if I did a new build i'd get one. however in terms of games perf i.e fps the difference I dont think is big and certainly in terms of loading times again the difference doesnt merit the cost in my opinion.

most of my games bar shogun2 (which takes 2mins or so) load fast on a normal (albeit fast..raptor) hdd. i'd only get a 120gb one I think but would be a tight squeeze to fit on os and around ten games so am putting off getting one..

i always have a couple mmos stored which take up a fair whack of gb.
