or does 1.5 take care of both kingdoms AND medieval 2 total war?

I think you have to upgrade them separately, but it's been a while since I installed the last patch.

1.5 should serve for both. The base install for M2TW and installing at least 1 Kingdoms campaign will have you patched to current for both.

Both of them are separate updates for different exes. You can't install kingdoms if v1.2 & v1.3 patches aren't already installed on your base copy. Running kingdoms installer will automatically first of all do that before proceeding so there's nothing cumbersome in it.
