Default Wow,playing at Ptolemy is really fun.

Im playing as Ptolemy and I'm having a really good time. The first battle with Antiochus III ended with a stalemate (timer ran out) then I sent much of the army back to Alexandria where they could retrain when I had the buildings. But before the battle Id organised a reinforcement column from the local garrisons giving Ptolemy IV a new army the next turn. So he moved on and took Jerusalem (it might not be jerusalem but the name seems similiar ingame) then the city south of Antioch where he finished off Antiochus before moving onto Antioch itself.Unfortunately he found himself cornered by a reinforcement stack and was essentially massacred. His son Alypius then moved up a column of rather good troops to avenge his father but was stopped at a river crossing. However he fortunately managed to avert a complete disaster by covering his mens withdrawal with an Elephant charge.

But heres the real problem,a plague in Alexandria means that I cannot retrain Alypius' survivors....

So all in all Im really enjoying this campaign and would recommend it to any players who haven't already tried it,it's a nice break from playing as Rome.

the one think i like about playing as Ptolemy is their is no one around you except the Selucids and the greeks so you will only have to fight on 2 fronts.

It's a shame the Seleucids are just SO BIG I'm leaving the African Greeks alone to keep a buffer between Carthage and I.

yeah well I rounded up the phalangites against cata eleph and they all died! the phalangites I mean... then I gathered an army of slingers, akontistai and numidian cavalry attacked the elephants not a single one died... strange because I concentared some slingers on hypaspists and hetairoi and disaster for them... hmmm indestructable elephants... oh not to mention that my petit eleph quickly got scared and started attacking my own troops, plus a failed flank attack on their light troops... hmm how can you beat those cata eleph!?

Well there is one risky tactic and can go either way.

Fire arrows. Make them panic and soon they will run amok. The only risk is that they will head towards your own men.

I only really use elephants when a battle is near defeat and my army is mauled.

I'll put Ptolemy down on the list, right now I'm ending turn after turn to play a late Roman Republic campaign just for fun.

Back in the early 2.5 closed beta i tested an armenian campaign and to beat the cathapract elephants ( i recall them to be even more op if i am not wrong) i used to save 1-2 units to literally pin them down while i dealt with the rest of the army
it's true that i had those armor piercing guys( nakarars?? not sure btw) but still there was no way to kill them until they broke and/or went amok
I honestly think 1-2 hypaspistis or other high armored guys ( not phalanagitai though) should be able to stand until you can rout the rest of the army bring javelin trowers or archers to the back and start firing
