    Default Hill forts

Having been absent from the first RTW, perhaps it's time we saw the inclusion of Celtic hill forts/ oppida, ala Maiden Castle and Alesia, in the sequel? These would have to be, by definition, situated on high ground, similar to some of the castles in Shogun, with impressive wooden ramparts and elaborate gateways...Part of the problem with barbarian towns in RTW was that they appeared too similar to the larger cities of the Mediterranean, situated on flat ground with little individual character. With the new engine and the promise of unique cities, wouldn't it be more exciting to storm something like this?

Yes! I agree that Hillforts should be implemented for the Celtic Factions especially Briton and Pictland. They were used quite often during this era and I see no reason why not too add them.

These forts are necessary imo, something similar to this were some settlements in MTW2 Kingdoms Teutonic campaign. I also want to see reintroduction of encampments/camps imo these would fit great into whole roman periode setting

Yeap they look really cool, would love to see them in game. Just hope the occasional town is in that style, rather than every single one though.

yeah i think romans should be able to build forts like in ETW on NTW and as you progress on the tech tree or the generals ability tree the forts would become better with archer and ballista towers XD the other civs should be able to build forts too but not as advanced as the roman ones.

Agreed, the Oppidum is absolutely necessary if they want to depict the Celts in a reliable fashion. In fact, CA should also not forget that this 'citadel-building' was by no means exclusive to the Celtic peoples. For example, many of the pre-Alexandrian urban foundations in the Middle East were similar constructions, see for example the Citadel of Aleppo, or the Citadel of Arbil. Another great example is the original urban style of the Greeks: the acropolis is essentially just a citadel, one that was later often accompanied by a lower-lying town where such people as artisans and merchants lived.

I definitely like the idea of military installations separate from settlements, they've never really done them that well in past games.

Well, that's until they got to Empire and Shogun, where they went too far in the opposite direction and made the two too seperate.

The best one was Medieval 2: you have cities and castles. But I think that castles should be like those buildable forts you used to have, not the capital of a province.

Totally agree, something we included in RS2.5....modelled on maiden castle, although limited somewhat by the constraints on walls that the RTW engine allows.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I think the EB team are doing something similar for EB2 if I'm not mistaken.

Would be good to include variations for different cultures - hill forts in Britain, oppida in central Europe, there was a similar hillfort culture too particularly in the north western Iberian peninsular.

Great fun to attempt to attack. I've visited quite a few of these...maiden castle, Danebury, Oswestry and it's great to get some sense of the scale of these.

I do hope they make hillforts for the celtic barbarians(I say this because I don't know if the non celtic barbarians such as Germans builded hillforts). This only not gives more historical acurracy but it also gives the celtic barbarian factions some advantage.

I also hope they make a platform on the second stage of wooden wall, like in MTW 2. Because of this barbarian factions were also weaker as they couldn't deploy their archers/slingers/skirmishers on the walls.

Didn't the ''barbarian'' villages or minor towns already look like that in RTW? At least they were situated on a hill when having palisades and I liked that a lot. It would be cool to see most gallic towns as oppida and with better fortifications indeed.

I just dont want alesia or the gaul city to start off with some minor defences in turn 1.I think cities in the game should start out from turn 1 represented fully.Carthage should be massive as she was the pinnacle of the mediterranian cities. And the gauls with strong hilltop fort city etc.

It also helps stomp the turn 6 stomps as thier capital city would be strong defence wise.

CA had made some of these (hill forts) very nicely in MTW 2 Teutonic campaign: they were the lowest level of a barbarian/pagan town, easier to defend than a castle two levels higher...

Those Oppidums looks like Japanese Castles in S2TW...the problem i have with Shogun 2 Castles that its...dead...a Well-Fortified Fort, indeed.. but there is no Jokamachi to liven up the place...feels like contesting a Fortress in a middle of nowhere...do not feels like i'm fighting over Kyoto, Edo, Odawara, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Hakodate, or other impotant places...

So, I really hope the Oppidums in R2TW feels alive...destructible buildings...sattelite villages dotting the surroundings...living town inside the Oppidums...Constructed buildings appears in Siege Map...
