Default Rome 2 will deliver "a darker vision of war" Rezzed Infos

It sound like that they are trying to get more realistic not only in historical facts. The whole setting seems to be more realistic than it was before.

I like this because it pushes you right in this dark period of brutality and intrigues.

    What do you think?

The Romans did put ballistas on ships. It's not a stretch to use them to end a siege.
Ok but I cant recall them tearing down cities with them, imagine ships moving about on the sea ~ what kind of accuracy would you get? Was it just the odd ship in the fleet which had them?

Does it add to the gameplay or take something from that?

I’d say the latter, I want to take the cities with my troops, artillery is something of a copout.

good that cities will have them too tho

I know the game is called Rome and all, but i sure hope the focus doesn't all drop only on the roman faction. Sure deciding between a monarchy, republic or empire sounds fun (for those that play with Rome), but i want to be able to something similar with an hellenic faction or a "barbarian" tribe.

Tearing down cities is absurd but the most well known and well documented examples of naval vs city warfare are Rhodes (city won) Carthage and Syracuse.

It wasn't uncommon for ships to have artillery, Caesar's green freshly built fleet had artillery just outside Massallia (sp) had artillery mounted on it. Using a ram is hard and some things including rower exhaustion would make other weapons needed; even with ramming it didn't always mean the battle was over.

Well some of this is marketing speak. If you watch video game PR in general then buzz words like "visceral" and attempts to link the game with movie & tv trends like the "sword, sex and sandals" genre are not good signs. It's like the typical recipe for games industry dumbing down and design by focus group. But who can say exactly.

I don't think it is necessarily bad. The rise of the Republic was a brutal time, but Rome TW barely reflects that. Soldiers, diplomats, etc show little emotion, heck, even exterminating cities is done nonchalantly. A little more reality is hardly a bad thing. I don't think sex is going to feature much, apart from assassinations.

I think what's important is that we can remove by modding anything we don't like.. Hopefully anything too tacky gameplaywise won't be fundamental/unmoddable to the engine.

Still a lot "will be >>general info<< " (it's not like we can expect much more) but if they stick to somethings they said in this interview, I'll be happy to spend my money, again, on TW game.
"For after the their baptism the Croats made a covenant, confirmed with their own hands and by oaths sure and binding in the name of St. Peter the apostle, that never would they go upon foreign country and make war on it, but rather would live at peace with all who where wiling to do so; and they recived from the same pope of Rome a benediction on this effect, that if any other foreigners should come against the country of these same Croats and bring war upon it, then might God fight for the Croats and protect them, and Peter the disciple of Christ give them victories."

I do hope there will be far more cities on the campaign map compare to the amount of them in let's say Shogun 2 ; Napoleon ; ETW.

Reading some of the info from the interviews, they've hinted that they don't want you to micro-manage hundreds of regions.

@swoosh so - Well, CA has spoken alot about the Province-management, but as far as I understood it, it's a flexible system, meaning you can sort of use it like "Auto-manage" in Rome Total War... That's what I gathered from it atleast, I don't hope you're right on your part though! Would hate to see some AI pulling frontline provinces into mega-cities with loads of fluffy cultural buildings as first priority instead of strengthening the border first >.<
Hopefully the system will be as sophisticad as to let the player micro-manage if wish be... There's just no way I can imaigne them bringing in a complex system that'd auto-manage a way that'd appease or even out-do human players who got a base experience with the game.

I think the provinces are going to work like theaters from empire, meaning that while they contain many regions the tax policies for all of them must be the same, although it sounds like they may also share buildings and other functions, we will see

Sounds awesome so far but so long to wait. I really want to see some actual gameplay videos and the map of course.

"Close-up, we want the men to feel more human," he said. "We've got facial animations, emotional interactions between men, so that if the guy next to me gets hit by an arrow, I'll react to that.
I've always thought this was missing from TW! Even in Shogun 2, which is a beautiful game on an absurdly awesome engine, I thought it looked cheesy that guys had zero reaction to arrow volleys and stuff unless they got killed by one. The thought of a volley going into soldiers and seeing a few guys stop and maybe tend to their buddies for a second, or simply stagger backwards out of the way of a falling comrade... just sounds amazing.

Sounds like they are expanding on the wounded animations from FOTS. Having individual animations for reaction to missle fire and casualties will be great.

Actual formation combat and sensible combat mechanics would be much better as they would add something useful to the game...

    I didn’t like the sound of this;

"artilleries on ships can "tear down cities".

Did that ever happen? I doubt it, and I wouldn’t want to see it, I don’t want anything that will make it easy ~ and it sounds like the game is going to be easy.
Ship catapult could have a small effect but mostly very inaccurate with limited ammo.
