Robot avatars have got a step closer to being the real world doubles of those who are paralysed or have locked-in-syndrome.

Scientists have made a robot move on a human's behalf by monitoring thoughts about movement, reports New Scientist.

The man-machine link joined a man in a brain scanner in Israel and a robot wandering a laboratory in France.

The person controlling the robot could also see through the eyes of his electronic surrogate.

The researchers are now working on ways to make the man-machine link more sensitive and to let people speak via the robot.

That is simply...awesome! It will change pretty much everything, especially medicine, space exploration and of course war.

You know, after seeing a TED video, and rereading this thread...We are slowing becoming cyborgs.

We are already heavily reliant on external/physical electrical devices: cellphones, watches, pacemakers*, diabetic equipment*, vehicles, and so on. The virtual world has already been created, and stabilised to handle whatever people desire or need.

And mentally controlling robots is just the next step.

It is insane to think about it...100 years ago, we were barely getting used to machines; a 1000 years ago, almost everything was natural. And soon, we'll probably be able to colonize planets and far more.
Almost like the plot for the animation of the legend of the galactic heroes

We probably be developed far enough in the biological sciences to regenerate damaged tissue, so the option of going partial or full cyborg is a matter of preference, by then.

It's the possibility of sensors able to detect subtle brain signals and our ability to refine adjustments there that should make this very interesting.

You mean through traitional television or as if he was seeing out his own eyes? I doubt it was the latter. If it was, how would that work?

Probably connect with the region of brain which control your sight; there are studies for this area with quite good result, close enough to make proto-artificial eyes for some patients.
