Icon14 We Want a Moddable Rome 2: Total War!

I agree that enough people have asked CA ever since Empire to make future games more moddable. But I just want to reiterate: The thing about what made Rome Total War and Medieval 2 Total War so great was not only the game themselves but their moddability. It is hard to find gamers playing games that are 6-8 years old, but heck, I still play Medieval 2 with mods, and I still ENJOY it.

Empire, Napoleon and Shogun 2 were moddable to the extent that we could add units, edit techologies, buildings, and re-distribute provinces. But the extent is no where close to how much you could mod for Rome and Medieval 2.

I want Rome 2 to be as moddable as Rome and Medieval 2, and I am certain that many others agree the same. Even though the the complexity of the games might prevent a full-scale accessibility in to modding the game, I want CA to realize that modding not only INCREASES THEIR SALES, but makes their games more interesting and re-playable.

I really appreciate the CA members and how they try to listen to us and offer to take our suggestions. I also hope this thread gains much attention to persuade CA to increase moddability in their games- and yes, that includes export_descr_unit.txt and descr_strat.txt.

Let's see what they have to say at the modding summit.

Also, besides the campaign map what can you change in medieval 2 that you can't change in empire and shogun?

Judging from the graphics (which is in turn based off of the 2 screenshots ive seen) i would say that Rome 2 will not be like Rome or Medieval 2 in terms of modability....its possible that it will be even harder to mod than Shogun 2...of course i could be completely off, maybe theyll release some kindof comprehensive set of modding tools for Rome II, i dont know, i just tend to be skeptic.

Judging by the graphics in the picture with the ships attacking carthage were going to need painters and artists not modders

The thing is, Rome and Medieval can be modded without tools, so not only can you mod many more aspects of the game, it is also easier to mod them.

I am also a huge fan of the Campaign Script.txt in rome and medieval 2. You can make scripts for almost anything: spawn armies, create invasions, etc. In Empire -> Shogun, this is much more limited.

I just have to say, many more aspects of the game have become hard coded since Empire.

If you want to play with 2004/2005 technology the so be it as you still have Rome and Med2. You can't expect all the features you see in ETW-->FOTS be possible with text base modding and tga files for map.

It's much more open in warscape than the old rome engine of 2004. Granted it's much more difficult to mod. Technology has changed.

The scripting people use for most of the advanced features of the mods slow the game down substantially. Turn times for some of the larger mods like stainless steel and third age are pretty bad. That's the reason they don't use simple text files anymore in the first place.

None of the games were built for modding, people just figured it out with a little help from CA. That's why I said let's just see what they have to say about the future of modding at this summit they are having. They aren't oblivious to the popularity of skyrim in regards to modding and have probably heard more than a few times about Dayz and what it's done for sales. Modding is going more mainstream now than it has been in the past and the wise developers are catching on that it's good for everyone, if CA doesn't have modding support in the next game then they probably have their hands tied on the matter (SEGA).

    Seriously?

Who the hell would pick anything other than "modding every aspect"?

Seriously - If you don't want to mod, why would it be any skin off your back to let others have the option to make Mods? It is like these people don't want others to mod either, just because...

This is a point that is lost on controlling, anti-modding developers. Your game is more appealing to a larger group of people and ensures that once people have become bored of whatever you made, the game will live on through its modding community.

Despite massive overall respect for CA, moddability is something the community needs.

I doubt it will be moddable because of dlc...even though good mods bring games sales up an example would be dayz, Arma 2 has been on the top sellers list ever since dayz was released.

One thing that would be awesome, for the Romans that is would be specific elite legions. So III Sena Gallica, X Equestris, Batavian Auxilia etc.
Some campaigns would be Ancient times (Persians, Egyptians, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians etc), Pelopnessian War, no doubt CA would make a Barbarian Invasion and Alexander expansions.

I've played all warscape games on vanilla until today except once in a while I play Sekigahara mod for Shogun 2. That is because I have completed vanilla Shogun 2 vanilla clans domination campaigns.
