    Icon4 3rd person Gameplay?!

Ok guys i've heard something about 3rd person gameplay
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBq_04CF0qc at 2:10
in FOTS you can control the artillery/ ships..will that be possible to control the balistas, triremes and a soldier(mount&blade style) on the battlefield?

There is a possibility they'll use that feature from FOTS. It was one of the best features to be honest, as far as controlling one guy mount and blade style, it's not possible as the attacks don't work like that (directional) it's based more on animations playing.

    A bomb's a bad choice for close-range combat.

You guys are ruining this series by giving CA developers the Idea that people likes arcade style of gameplay.
For me, is better if they keep concentration in improving strategy aspect of the game.

The 3rd person thing from FOTS was great. I'm guessing it'll come back for siege weapons.

Would be AMAZING if you could control one guy Mount and Blade style though lol but that isn't going to happen. I like their idea anyways of having the 3rd person follow a soldier even if it is just a cinematic.

I don't really see the point in a single unit but I could see something working with a centurion and the ability to move the century at the same pace, if you ever do go into this mode an AI should take control of your other units so they don't sit idle.

I think it's an idea that people have suggested countless times and it still doesn't work well. Especially not in Rome, of all games. For one thing, since units are controlled in, well, units, not as individuals, you couldn't have much freedom with what to do or where to move when you're controlling one guy. What will combat be like? It certainly can't be like M&B because of how huge the battles are in TW; especially so with the graphics TW games have compared to M&B. For another, there's going to be a lot of formation based combat in this game. Do you really want to be one guy in a phalanx? And the big one: this is a game about controlling armies in real time and reacting to how other armies are moved in real time. Unless you're fighting an incredibly weak army (like one you can autoresolve with no casualties) bad things are going to happen while you're off controlling that one guy.

3rd person might work in FOTS, but that's because there's a lot of drawn out shooting and there's not too much moving once combat has initiated. That's not what happens in RTW in my experience. Also, in FOTS you control artillery, which generally has a long enough range that you don't have a whole ton to do while you would control it anyways. But I still only used that feature once in FOTS.

It is not possible to 'control' the unit in 3rd person. It means here that camera will be put in 3rd person style on the back of the soldier. You will be able to see how he fights and his expressions and the thick of battle from a nearby perspective.

Something caught my ear in that interview. The designer mentioned how he wants you, the player, to be aware that your soldiers are doing their best for you and struggling. Then he adds, somewhat off the cuff - "and they may even be aware of you, too."

In another interview, CA mentioned that the player's attention is a resource, and they want to have some kind of incentive for the player to come in and look at the dirt and grime.

This is by no means a concrete thing, but the aforementioned comment makes me think that, if the soldiers are aware of your presence near them, they could be inspired and fight harder. Perhaps by zooming in, units would get a morale bonus, fight harder, punch through the line and accomplish something they wouldn't have otherwise. This would come at the expense of the player managing other units for that moment.

I think this incentive to zoom in would really add something special to the battlefield. Give the player a sense of urgency - "My right flank is dissolving, I have to get down there!"

What do you guys think? Would that be a good feature?

No. Gods no, that would be ridiculous. Im not a god, Im a general.

Now, if I moved my general over there, yeah. They could get bonuses. But not just by zooming in, that would be silly.

Yeah I agree with this, giving bonuses for zooming into a specific area just seems too gamey to me.

Au contraire, the ability to rapidly reform and redeploy your army from a birdseye view at a second's notice is, I believe, nothing short of godlike :.

I get the point that it sounds gamey, though, because it is. I shudder to think that such a feature would be mandatory, or even overly useful. Still, if I were an animator at CA and I spent all that time/money on creating animations and facial expressions, I would lobby for some incentive for the player to get down and see all that detail.

Of course, the cinema and warm fuzzy feeling of it may be incentive enough .

Well, my incentive to see the awesome cinematic battles would be the ability to see the awesome cinematic battles.

As to the other thing, I always imagine that Im only actually watching the battle, and that the general and his officers are actually commanding it. But if the troops fought better just from my mere gaze, it would seem more like Black And White 2.

i wouldnt mind a "Hero Mode" like in Rise & Fall

of course, it shouldnt be that arcadey and cheesy
and you shouldnt be an almighty hero, but a random soldier fighting alongside the ranks. it doesnt even need any impact on the gameplay, just a cool cinematic feature.
you re just one of the guys in the unit, block with left mouse button and hit with right mouse button but it wouldnt affect the outcome. if your unit routes or you re killed the camera would just return to default view
it would just be like the current 1st person view but with a bit more control
