    Default Game engine

I found out that R2TW will have a new game engine, and my mate said 'oh thats good as computers that are not as powerful will be able to run R2TW smoothly with few lag' And I said this is not true as a new engine adds more graphical enhancments to the game, therefore using more memory and needing better graphical software.

So which of us is right, do new game engines allow not so powerful computers to handle the new game better, or do new game engines require more from computers?

    which of us is right
I've heard a few people say it in both ways. Lower spec computers will be able to run it better, but higher performance computers will have to work harder to get on highest settings, because the highest settings require more memory.

Wait until CA releases the specs then add about 50% for decent gameplay if the past holds true.

its a new rendering engine not a new game engine,

what this means is if they worded it right is that graphics pipeline of the engine will improve however, CPU side things are probably unchanged

What this means is graphics quality SHOULD improve slightly and performance should remain the same or better,

however im guessing due to a lack of engine code and multi threading the real bottleneck will once again remain CPU side.

    Neither of you are correct.

No not really. The graphics pipeline is just the stages input goes through to end up with the output. For the longest time the graphics pipeline was fixed, now however programmable pipelines are done through shaders and more recently tessellation. If I'm updating the rendering part of my engine (which isn't my engine it is licensed), I usually wouldn't be updating the graphics pipeline.

I remember the guy being interviewed just saying they made a new rendering engine. I doubt the guy said we made a new shader therefore we have a new rendering engine.

You asked a vague question I gave a vague answer it seemed fitting. I'll explain a bit more, it depends on what was done. I can't get anymore specific without more information.

I am 99% sure he was talking about shaders, I will check when I get back from work.

Yup, until we see better multicore support, it's a useless upgrade, too. Especially with the dueling, and more agents with Warscape, performance is just horrendous.

most likely they are changing how they render out or handle post process effects on the GPU, for the most part they just lump on more and more shader code for post processing effects, some of these effects can be done differently but would require changing code, I mean hell look at the Gloss issue in Shogun 2 removing it gave a performance bump across the board it was one shader effect, essentially we will probably see them change up Post process effects, how they are used and to what extent. Most i feel the interview where the mention the change is just gibberish and we wont see any real optimizations for Rome II just more of the same. I just find it funny they plan to overhaul graphics rendering or pipeline or however they wish to describe it, instead of fixing poor multi thread performance which has been holding them back for some time.

When someone says they have made a new rendering engine they most likely do not mean they made a new shader.

yea interview said new rendering engine but its still warscape so no "real" changes.

At least each Total war game looks better then the last unlike some series that actually relapse in terms of Graphics. Like Crysis 2 and some COD Titles, if my computer has to brute force Rome 2 because of poor optimization so be it.

Yeah well I can't really stand by Crysis 2, but the engine behind it (CryEngine 3) was an improvement over CryEngine 2. I'm not quite sure the reasoning behind the lower resolution textures and the like which made it inferior to Crysis.

Yeah the engine was fine but the game itself was just a blatant console port. The fact they had to patch DX11 and Hi-Res textures well after the release of the game was sad.

I'll bet my graphics card that it doesnt support multicore more than 2 or 3 threads. Kind of like S2TW was supposed to support 4 thread (or cores) ... Still running on one thread on my i7 HAH.
