The actual science behind population doubling

So my recent forays in the EMM have been revolving a lot around population doubling recently, and frankly I'm not super equipped to deal with it because aside from the name, well I don't actually know anything about it.

So, as this is the science forum, I was hoping that someone here could help enlighten me (google tried but did so in a way that I just couldn't understand).

So: What exactly is population doubling? How is it supposed to work? Does it work? Why/Why not?

The actual science behind the changes in Population Structure?

Demography, a branch of Sociology.

Population grows with GDP and the functional distribution of said growth around the different classes of society. Major triggering-factors include access to Health services, Food Quality, Cultural Conditioning(religious or non-religious factors) and War.

But after certain level of Growth and Distribution, unless there's some strong triggering-factors like religious logic, the avaibility of birth-control, the existence of a ''Middle Class logic''(through which many plan their lives in accordance to Professional or Academic factors before planning a family) and the prevalence of Urban Life revert the process of Pop-growth. In short, the rationale behind ''life-planning'' plays quite a big factor in actually decreasing the population explosion suffered during the last 2 centuries.
