Windows 7 Home Premium Freezing/Hanging on WELCOME screen

This has happened only once before; my PC starts up and then, after typing my password in, hangs on the WELCOME screen forever. When it happened before I did a hard restart of the PC (hold down the power button for ten seconds) and it worked. I've done it four times this morning, but to no avail. I can only start the desktop in safe mode. What is wrong? Is everything gone? How/can I even fix this? My desktop is an Alienware Aurora R3. Please help.

Do a startup repair, and/or check your disk for errors.

No.

In safe mode, go to "Computer" and right click on your main hard drive. Then click "Properties" and go to the tab labeled "Tools" and you should see an option called "Error Checking" and click it. Check both options (File system and bad sectors") and click "OK" Windows won't be able to check it, since it's in use, and you'll get a popup telling you this. Click "Schedule", follow the prompts, and restart your PC. It will do a chkdsk. Let it run.

If that doesn't work, do a startup repair. (Get Dutch or someone to tell you how, I have to go to work.

Startup repair should not touch your files.

There are no schedule prompts. When I click 'make schedule' it ust closes and there is no further dialogue

Windows will restart, so see if you computer works. Also let us know if it found bad sectors or files or anything like that.

Is your harddrive 1TB? If so, sounds like it's in the ballpark.

This actually happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was able to log into another account on my comp, ran CCleaner and then switched users and it let me log into my regular account. Hopefully what you are doing now will work, but if not, is there another account on your comp you can try? Maybe try creating another account in safe mode or enabling guest account.

From personal experience I've found startup repair really bad, also if the problem persists it may be your HDD that is busted.

What do I do when this CHKDSK is finished?

CHDSK said volume was clean. PC restarted itself and I typed in my password. Frozen on WELCOME again.

I'm going to try a startup repair
