Default What about the Papal States?

I feel the Papal States lack in diverse and unique units, especially compared to the other factions. Seeing as the Papal States and the Pope play such an important role in this game, and I am talking about both the symbolical role as well as the measures of excommunication and crusades, why havent the Papal States been made uniqe? I pray modders will be up to the task of doing the Pope's army justice.

Maybe they were hoping nobody noticed since it isn't a playable faction

Still I don't think it is so bad.

Papal States aside from a very few (1,000 or less) Papal Guard/Swiss Halberdiers was basically another Italian faction. Since its not playable why give slots in EDU to them more than the 2 unique they already have? Most Italian factions have only 2-3 uniques.

Not a playable faction? Which factions are playable is easily managable by you by changing the script. I find it very much fun to play them, but I find them lacking in units as I stated above.

Yes but not many people change them to playable so why focus on that as well as there are not many historical basis to create more unique units. If you can change the scripts its only a bit more difficult to import units from another mod to make Papal States more unique. CoW has some units that might look cool but you just can't share such units publicly without getting permission. Otherwise feel free to create a new unit but Papal States already has 2 uniques and access to most of the Italian roster and normal castle units etc. I am not sure what you are asking for since quite a few factions in the first part of the game only have 1 unique unit.

what unique units did they have? I suppose the only thing you could possibly do is to expand the papal guards into more units but there's little historical basis for that, the Pope very rarely relied on his own troops to fight in this period, whenever confrotned with serious threats he almost always got someone else to fight for him. I'm having problems thinking of even one serious battle invovling papal troops in this entire period where they didn't outright suck, if anything papal guards are already ridiculasly beyond their historical ability level, which never showed to be anything better than the commune militias else where (actually, it showed plenty of times it was far less effective.)

1180, an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity in East Asia, it's technology and wealth is the envy of the world. But soon conflict will engulf the entire region with great consequences and lasting effects for centuries to come, not just for this region, but the entire known world, when one man, one people, unites.....

The papal guard and the swiss guard, IIRC. Also this... cross.. carriage... crusade mercenary... thing, but that's not pope exclusive, since as I have said, it's a mercenary for other factions.

And yeah, The Crown of Castille and Portugal look as much alike as the Italian factions and the Pope, if not more.

If not unique units, it would've been awesome if they looked more unique, for example that the papal guard got an overhaul. Has anyone seen The Borgias? Now, that is a papal/swiss guard!
