Default Why does the Byzantine Empire have Terrible relations with.....EVERYONE?

For some reason I cant keep anyone's relation above so-so with them even so called allies. I was war with everyone i border by turn 27(being Venice , Hungary,Turks, the cumans were busy fighting kiev and ive never seen them do anything with their far west possessions)

Now I know they historically had bad relations with these factions, but even factions i should have good relations with (Genoa, Kiev) dont really like me. You would think even in these times there would be benefits in being friends with the real roman empire.

and before anyone asks i have never yet waged a offensive war and it is near turn 60. ive just been attacked left and right and every battle i win seems to lower my rep globally against factions that arent even involoved and shouldn't give a (Scotland? ing really?)

Ignore the infidels and the barbarians and their insults! You are Basileos ton Romaion! You don't need allies! Go out there and kill them all - every last heathen, every last Saracen, every last heretic! Let nobody stop the advance of the resurgent and triumphant Empire, till it reaches the end of the earth! (...or you could be like a real-life Byzantine emperor and just bribe them all.)

What difficulty are you playing on? On VH/VH all your relations worsen every turn I think

They had a military alliance from the end of the 10th century on, I'm not sure how long it lasted but it was quite long. Although they also fought against Kiev before, for Byzantium that's a really good relation
"Pompeius, after having finished the war against Mithridates, when he went to call at the house of Poseidonios, the famous teacher of philosophy, forbade the lictor to knock at the door, as was the usual custom, and he, to whom both the eastern and the western world had yielded submission, ordered the fasces to be lowered before the door of science."

Yaroslav the Wise lived up to his name and realised he wasn't going to capture Constantinople; he got an alliance instead. AFAIK it didn't stop; the Muscovites started calling themselves Tsars because after the fall of Constantinople the Grand Duke of Moscow was probably Constantine XI's heir (he was his nephew-in-law I think)

Ah yes I think it was him. They had decided to convert to orthodox Christianity anyway, so it made a lot of sense with so many enemies for both states around.

this is why i figured they would have better relations than average. they are just about the only so called allies in the area. and even they are pissed at me.

IM playing on H/H with Savage AI. Im am interested in seeing what the more aggressive ai is like considering with the Balanced ai i was attacked on turn 27

His daughter married Harald Hardrade so all Norwegian kings are descended from him Unfortunately Yaroslav was the son of a different wife of his father than the Byzantine Anna Porphyrogenita so the Norwegian kings aren't Byzantine

Yeah true. But Haldrade even served in the Varangian Guard

    @RedGuard

Indeed it's a bit strange then. I dunno what could cause it, maybe you just sack and kill all the time?

As for the allies, maybe you should also mention the Cumans. The Byzantines bribed them and payed them, yes, but they rarely fought each other while the Cumans helped to destroy enemies of the Empire (like the Pechenegs).

Game forums generally sucks. You have a lot of guys who thinks "I'm awesome 'cause I have 10.000 posts and you are a noob with only 5 posts", "I'm a godlike modder and you are a maggotlike player" or "I'm the admin, you loser! Dont mess, or even speak, with me!"

But when I read thinks like "You are Basileos ton Romaion! You don't need allies", "Kill them, kill them all. God will recognise his own" and "The Roman Empire is forever alone" I remember why I LOVE TW forum, especially Stainless Steel forum!
You try to read the threat to take some and end laughing around!

I'm impressed that nobody here has never created a topic called "I AM NAPOLEON!"

Try to see the Jagged Alliance 2 forum:

A guy: Hey! Can I mod your mod? I want to change some maps by myself and...
A modder: Do you think you are better than me!? I will not even mod anymore 'cause of YOU!!!

OR BETTER!!! In the suggestion thread!

A guy: Hey! Can you make this, this and this?
    A mooder: Why should I!?

    True story... for real.

The Byzantines have terrible relations with everyone because historically they were a nation of maximus phallus. Hey Crusaders can you guys take this city? Wow thanks for doing all the dying for us but we got this thanks for the free city trolololo! Hey Venice want to do some trade? PSYCHE! Thanks for the loot, dummies! Trolololo!

lol maximus phallus Ill keep that in mind. as for the venetians it makes me wonder how much longer the empire wuld have lasted if they hadn't sacked Constantinople on the fourth crusade thus pretty much sending the empire on a steady decline

Edit: oh and btw i the Hungarians asks for a ceasefire after they took Belgrade and i just annihilated the venetian fleet. the Turks decided they would fight the crusaders rather than me for the moment and we arrived at a ceasefire too. I still have very poor relations with both however.
