    Default Portraits mod

    I've been swapping all of the ingame portraits for real portraits and got to a point where I need some help.

    Northern and southern european generals are done. So are northern, southern and eastern european princesses and priests.

    I haven't done the inquisitors yet, but I think I can do them on my own.

    I am creating this thread to ask for help gathering portraits. They do not need to be period art (but it is better if they are), they just need to look authentic (non-digital). I'm not looking for actual photographs (from films or recreations). The pictures must date from around years 1000 - 1600, or represent people from that time. Also, if I see some community interest in this project, I can release it as a mod.

    What I need:

    Around 75 pictures for european diplomats;

    About 100 pictures for european merchants;

    As many eastern european general pictures as possible;

    Around 100 pictures for middle eastern diplomats;

    As many middle eastern general pictures as possible;

    Around 100 pictures for middle eastern merchants;

    Around 80 pictures for middle eastern priests.

    I don't know what to do with witches, heretics, spies and assassins (only rich people were pictured at the time), so I'm looking for suggestions or good sources for images of these agents.

    Some pictures of what's already done will be posted shortly.

    Thanks, Alpa

    Witches, heretics, spies, etc. There are contemporary images around...

    It's true that most of the quality art revolved around rich people and religious imagery, but if you look there are sources you could plumb for your needs. I found all these by googling "Medieval woodcuts" and "Medieval Manuscripts".

    Sounds like an entertaing mod anyway ... I'd love to help out if you still need it. How about if I try to come up with art for the witches/heretics etc, and if you like you could assign me some of the categories from your list in the OP?

    Sicknero,

    We need about 20 witches and 100 heretics. If you could work on them that would be great. I am currently working on european diplomats and inquisitors, so all the other ones are available.

    From your suggestions, the ones I like the most are the manuscripts, but almost anything will be better than the original portraits, so I will leave the choice of pictures to you. The final crop must be 69x96, so please bear that in mind when picking. Will you crop them or would you rather have me do that?

    Cheers

    PS I'm not sure this will fit but I'll leave it here as a suggestion - http://historyoftheancientworld.com/..._Carvaggio.jpg

    Medusa is an interesting idea Not sure where she'd fit into the scheme of things though...

    Cropping no prob I can do that, it'll be easier anyway for me to see which ones "work" that way. I get a selection together over the next couple of days and get back to you.

    Cheers

    That sounds great. Medusa could be a good representation of what people saw in witches (not what they actually were obviously), but it probably is a bit too subtle.

    Intriguing ideas. I never thought of Medusa as a witch before. I fear that you might be overwhelmed by pedant-assualts if you use her as a witch portrait

    So I'm gathering a collection together. Problem is that most of the portraits don't really have features that would identify as them as heretic/assassin/spy etc...

    (Edit; European priests no problem of course )

    Yeah, european priests were the easiest to find. I've finished the inquisitors and did 40 diplomats. I'll probably finish them tomorrow.

    For spies and assassins if we cannot find hooded or shady figures maybe we shouldn't bother.

    Maybe some early saints (centuries I-X) could be heretics? They'd look all dirty and stuff for the time's standards. If you think about it, Jesus was a heretic in his time (just a very successful one).

    Since we only need 20 witches, maybe the ones from the woodcuts would be alright.

    Dirty and stuff, lololol

    Anyway, yes exaxctly. Many Saints became so for exactly that reason. Martyred for heresy I mean.

    You might find me a little slow, but I'm working on it...

    Hey, I'm just happy someone actually thought this was worth some work. I obviously wasn't expecting you'd have all of your time available for a mod.

    Cool, glad to be doing something. Hunting down pics and cropping them is about the extent of my modding skills

    European diplomats are done. I have absolutely no idea where to find 100 portraits of medieval merchants, so that's on standby. Currently doing the eastern european generals.

    I've got a few eastern/european merchants. Not 100 though lol.

    (Edit; I've been using this for a couple of years now for piccy collecting, it's pretty good - http://www.calluna-software.com/Webripper )
