Quintus Furius Agricola
Q. Furius Agricola
Born 110 BCE - Tusculum, Roman Republic
Q. Furius Agricola was born in 110 BC. Quintus was the 5th son of Primus Agricola. His father is a retired Plebian, from Tusculum, the derivative of his name, Furius, is of Tusculan origin, the region where his family is from.
Under the early Roman Republic, Sp. Furius Agricola, was the founder of the House. He was a poor farmer, from Tusculum, with a courageous and fiery tongue
Under the Early Roman Republic, a magistrate from a nearby province rose up in rebellion against the newly formed republic, and attempted to seize large swathes of land. He personally led 1,000 men to Tusculum, in order to force the local magistrate to surrender, resupply, and provide forces for his growing army, as Tusculum was only 24km from the lightly defended Rome.
The local magistrate was ready to submit, when by legend... Sp. Agricola, was in the marketplace trading vegetables, when he stood up on his stand and called out to the crowd, as well as the demoralized, and outnumbered roman forces present, and he spoke a courageous speech to rally the men against the attackers. The Roman garrison was outnumbered, but with the volunteers from the crowd, the standing force matched the attacking army. The rebellious magistrate then avoided the city due to threat of losses, and he marched around towards Rome, where he was ambushed by a Roman Legion and he and his rebel army were slaughtered.
The local magistrate appraised old Sp. Agricola, and offered him a position in local politics. Being a multiple generation farmer, Spurius kept the Cognomen, Agricola (Farmer), in honor of his heritage, while he became a very respected young statesman. Future generations served Tusculum politics for several centuries more, until the young, and ever ambitious, Quintus, whom served as a local politician/ and part-time Garrison Commander, in Tusculum, decided to take his family name to the annals of history, with dreams of glory.
Quintus left Tusculum and travelled to Rome, in 85 B.C., at the age of 25, to seek further glory and honor for his house.
This is where the story of Q. Furius Agricola begins....
